About the Job

As a Revenue Tax Specialist you will assist auditors in preparation of audit workpapers, research, and computer system support.  In this position you will also assist auditors in determining that customer accounts are correct and accurate. You work to ensure the highest level of customer focus, with a strong commitment to the taxpayers of Indiana through continuous, innovative methods to increase accuracy, efficiency and productivity in all areas of departmental operations and tax administration.

You may access Federal Tax Information while performing daily job duty.  All taxpayer information, federal and state, obtained by an you in the performance of your duties is confidential and not to be shared with anyone outside the Department, except as specified by the Indiana Statute.  Any employee or officer of the Department of Revenue who accesses tax information without a business reason, unofficially or without approval, will be dismissed from employment.

A Day in the Life
  • Provides customer service by communicating in person, by telephone or in writing, instructing and furnishing information pertaining to various tax types administered and collected by the State Revenue Department.
  • Provide assistance with projects and training as needed in the assigned area.
  • Assist internal and external customers with RPS, CMS, and travel related questions and concerns 
  • Reviews and releases processing review items to allow or disallow claims for refunds and liabilities in RPS.
  • Performs account and financial maintenance which may result in creating and/or canceling liabilities, transferring payments, establishing payment arrangements, setting and releasing holds on liabilities, and contacts taxpayers concerning errors, delinquencies or overpayments in RPS and other related systems.
  • Computes and assesses penalty and interest due after determining penalty and interest is applicable on delinquent taxes, erroneous refunds, and/or registration in RPS and other related systems.
  • Verifies payments, credits and deductions claimed on various tax returns in RPS and other related systems, and computes and issues billings due to underpayment or nonpayment of taxes in RPS and other related systems.
  • Processes original and amended tax returns and forms as necessary to properly reflect results of reviews and examinations.
  • Prepares and administers training as necessary.


What We're Looking For
  • High School diploma plus 3 years experience accounting or auditing experience,
  • Or a post secondary degree in  accounting, business, finance or a related field
What You'll Need For Success
  • Excellent communication skill, both oral and written.
  • Strong RPS knowledge and experience preferred.
  • Proficiency in Office Suite.
  • Ability to research and gather documentary evidence in an organized and usable fashion.
  • Ability to apply and understand ethics and confidentiality laws. 
  • Performs well independently and as a part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor even in confrontational situations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to conduct sound decision making.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
