Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $55,016.00 but may be commensurate with education and job experience.
 

About the Job:

The Enteric Disease Epidemiologist serves as an Indiana state employee in the Epidemiology Resource Center (ERC) at the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH). The purpose of this position is to minimize morbidity and mortality associated with enteric diseases among Indiana residents by conducting a broad and complex range of investigative and analytical epidemiologic activities. The scope of this position includes, but is not limited to: outbreaks and surveillance of all enteric diseases and conditions.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Maintain current subject matter knowledge of the epidemiology and biology of enteric diseases;
  • Provide epidemiologic consultation and technical assistance to local health departments, health care providers, veterinarians, and the general public with respect to enteric infectious diseases;
  • Conduct routine epidemiologic surveillance for enteric infectious diseases;
  • Lead or coordinate epidemiologic investigations of individual cases and/or outbreaks of enteric infectious diseases;
  • Design and conduct applied epidemiologic studies of enteric infectious diseases;
  • Manage and analyze data collected through routine surveillance, public health investigations, and applied epidemiologic studies;
  • Prepare and disseminate written and oral reports and presentations that communicate necessary information to internal and external partners;
  • Conduct educational presentations and/or trainings for a variety of audiences, including local health departments, health care providers, veterinarians, and the general public;
  • Engage directly with members of the public at health fairs and other outreach events;
  • Participate in writing grants and other funding proposals;
  • Serve as an agency spokesperson at the invitation and direction of the IDOH Office of Public Affairs;
  • Evaluate the impact of legislation or policy proposals at the invitation and direction of the IDOH Director of Legislative Affairs;
  • Serve as a backup to other infectious disease epidemiologists;
  • Serve on the ERC Social Media Team and provide social media messaging content on enteric infectious diseases;
  • Serve on the ERC website editing team and maintain the IDOH webpages on enteric infectious diseases;
  • Serve as the IDOH epidemiologist on call after business hours for approximately two to three weeks per year;
  • Serve on the IDOH Health Monitoring Team for emerging or re-emerging diseases.

What You'll Need for Success:

To be hired as an Epidemiologist E7 (minimum salary $55,016 annual), the successful candidate should meet one of the following requirements: 

  • A master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences, or social sciences) and ≥ 2 years’ relevant public health experience OR
  • A master’s degree in a non-relevant field and ≥ 4 years’ public health experience OR
  • A doctoral-level degree in epidemiology or other relevant fields OR
  • A graduate or professional degree in a health-related field (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service, or CSTE Applied Epidemiology Fellowship) OR 
  • A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field and ≥ 4 years’ relevant public health experience OR
  • A bachelor’s degree in a non-relevant field and ≥ 6 years’ public health experience.
  • Current employee promotion requirement: Internal candidate should be a high-performing Epidemiologist 1 or other internal role based on demonstrated ability, competency attainment, and/or performance feedback. 

If the selected candidate does not meet the Epidemiologist E7 criteria, we will consider candidates with the following criteria and will hire as an Epidemiologist 1 at an annual salary of $50,076. Once Epidemiologist 1 meets the above criteria and/or is a high-performing employee based on demonstrated ability, competency attainment, and performance feedback, the employee may be promoted with an increase in pay at that time. 

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences),
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., public health, biological sciences), OR
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a non-relevant field and 2+ years of public health experience.
