The mission of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education.

Position Overview:


The Wildlife Science Technician assists the Wildlife Science Biologists with research and management activities focused on a species or group of species.  You will complete work related to the survey, biological monitoring, and/or control of the natural resources at an assigned property. When not engaged in these functions, you may assist in the maintenance of property facilities and equipment. 


This position is based at the Bloomington Field Office.


A Day in the Life:


The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Develop and/or conduct surveys
  • Build and maintain traps and other equipment
  • Coordinate volunteers
  • Enter data
  • Staff check stations
  • Process biological samples from carcasses or by trapping and handling live animals
  • Hiking 5 miles over rough terrain


Working conditions:

  • You may work evenings, weekends, and holidays
  • You may work in inclement weather
  • You may be required to wear a DNR provided uniform or protective equipment
  • You may work with offenders
  • You may be required to travel to additional properties
  • May be required to work around potentially dangerous heavy equipment (e.g. tractors, disks, mowers, planters, etc.).

What You'll Need for Success:


Required credentials:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • A valid driver’s license
  • (1) year of work experience


Preferred credentials:

  • Some college coursework in wildlife management, natural resources, biology, ecology, forestry and/or related areas of study
  • Basic knowledge of scientific methods, procedures, and theories applicable to the management of invasive plant populations


Additional Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to understand and apply basic biological principals, ecological variables and interactions, plant identification, herbicide application, invasive plant management techniques (of conservation biology, the management of forests, wetlands, and prairie habitats), and life histories of invasive plants.
  • Ability to lift equipment, tools, or materials up to 50lbs
  • Ability to sustain periods of strenuous physical activity
  • Ability to carry out assignments with general instruction and limited supervision.


Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.


Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:


This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period  




This position starts at a minimum rate of $16.80 per hour and may be commensurate with education and experience.
