Indiana Department of Revenue

The Indiana Department of Revenue is responsible for providing service to Indiana citizens regarding state tax matters. Additionally, the department administers state tax laws, develops regulations and makes decisions about tax policy.

 

This position is typically filled at a salary of $26,702

Research Analyst

The general purpose of this position is to provide Quality Customer Service to taxpayers and internal customers who contact the Department Titles and Clearances Section for assistance. Tax research analysts should be able to provide public assistance duties relative to clearances of certain titles and or licenses. This position reports directly to the Supervisor and/or Working Lead. The Research analyst also works to ensure the highest level of customer focus, with a strong commitment to the taxpayers of Indiana through continuous, innovative methods to increase accuracy, efficiency and productivity in all areas of departmental operations and tax administration.

A day in the life
  • Provides Quality Customer Service utilizing the 4-Step process.
  • Provides assistance to taxpayers by phone or by mail; advises, instructs and furnishes information with respect to the reinstatements of corporations, workman’s compensation clearances, vehicle title liens/releases, employee background/verification checks for state agencies, auditor levy checks, Hoosier lottery retailers/offsets and much more.
  • Corresponds with taxpayers by telephone or in writing for the purpose of providing technical tax information, tax law interpretation and procedural information in order to ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
  • Ability to research and resolve issues according to procedures and discusses with and escalates to team lead or supervisor as appropriate and necessary:
  • Has considerable knowledge of RPS and Case Management and utilizes the system to assist taxpayers.
  • Processes payments for a variety of tax types - electronically utilizing the E-pay or INTax Pay system or through incoming mail;
  • Performs related work or other special projects as required or assigned by the Supervisor or Management Team
What we're looking for
  • Two (2) years as a Tax Analyst 5 in the Department of Revenue; OR two (2) years post-secondary education in business, accounting or related field plus one (1) year as a Tax Analyst 5
  • Considerable knowledge of State and Federal tax laws, rules and regulations applicable to each of the several types of taxes;
  • Considerable knowledge of the procedures for properly preparing the various tax returns and forms;
  • Ability to interpret and apply tax laws and regulations to individual situations;
  • Analyst must use considerable amount of judgment in the selection, interpretation and application of numerous law, rules, regulations and procedures in connection with individual and unique cases and situations.
  • Working knowledge of computers and various Dept. of Revenue computer programs.
  • Ability to discuss and settle tax matters in a tactful and responsive manner with taxpayers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, using correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.
  • Ability to apply and understand ethics and confidentiality laws.
  • Can effectively cope with change, can handle stress and effectively deal with the unexpected.
