Salary:

This position is Part Time and typically hires at a rate of $13.26/hour.

About the Job:

As the Public Engagement Specialist (Part-Time), you will assist with the development, implementation, and evaluation of all programming and services for the general public, families and adults at the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites.  You will be assigned within the galleries to engage and interact with museum visitors, assist with visitor questions and concerns, conduct demonstrations and activities and monitor artifacts and exhibit components.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

 

  • Assist with research, development and facilitation of public, adult and family programs including special events, community festivals, holiday programs, classes and daily engagement experiences
  • Prepare all materials for programs, set up and tear down of equipment and evaluations
  • Work with the Director of Public and Family Engagement to develop and implement goals, objectives and learning outcomes for public, adult and family programs
  • Conduct informal and formal evaluation for programs, within the galleries, and throughout the museum as appropriate
  • Enhance the visitor experience in the museum by engaging and interacting with visitors within the galleries, assisting with visitor questions and concerns, and facilitating activities and demonstrations within galleries and throughout museum
  • Coordinate opening and closing museum galleries with museum security
  • Monitor artifacts and exhibit components within the galleries by communicating gallery and visitor issues and concerns to museum security and other museum staff as appropriate
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of demonstrations and programs
  • Train and oversee volunteers who present museum programming
  • Assist with program and education engagement department project teams
  • Support Visitor Services in providing a welcoming environment for all museum visitors
  • Provide excellent customer service to daily visitors, students, educators and parents
  • Manage customer complaints, incidents and accidents; taking the lead in emergency situations and safety issues

What We’re Looking For:

The ideal candidate in this role should minimally have a Bachelor’s Degree in Museum Studies, Elementary Education, Arts Education, Science Education, Anthropology, Public History or related field with preferred experience in formal and informal teaching.

  • Knowledge of non-traditional teaching methods
  • Appreciation of how a museum can be used as a teaching tool
  • Excellent public speaking skills with versatility and should display enthusiasm and creativity while interacting with visitors of all ages and abilities
  • Ability to communicate information to multiple audience profiles, including adults in a wide variety of formats
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some evenings
  • Ability to generate creative ideas – high levels of creative thinking
  • Research skills and the ability to produce accurate information
  • Excellent writing skills a plus
  • Ability to work with others on a development team, producing a unified product
  • Manage multiple projects with the ability to prioritize activities and accomplish them
  • Ability to accept critical suggestions and respond effectively to evaluations
  • Competent business skills: telephone etiquette, writing business letters and contracts, spelling and grammar
  • Strong organizational, critical and detailed thinking, analysis and networking skills
  • Experience completion of projects within a budget
  • Familiarity with ADA compliancy rules and procedures and awareness of cultural sensitivity issues
     

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
