Public Defender of Indiana

Position Summary:

The position offers administrative support to four to five attorneys representing incarcerated individuals. Our paralegals are important to our clients’ legal representation and to our entire office’s function. Duties include, but are not limited to, preparing and formatting pleadings, client case file maintenance and organization; calendaring hearings and pleading deadlines; interacting with court agencies and the Department of Correction; scheduling meetings, helping with court trial and appellate pleading preparation and filing, ordering documents and other records, along with other tasks as needed.

Essential Job Functions:

Our ideal candidate is a team player who can multi-task; focus on assignments; effectively communicate with co-workers, outside agencies, court staff; has a demonstrated work history of dependability, initiative, and responsibility; is familiar with legal proceedings and with electronic court filing system; is proficient in Microsoft; and has an interest in indigent criminal defense and compassion for our clients and our work. A high school diploma or its equivalent is required; a bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate is preferred.

The Office offers a flexible work week schedule. Starting salary is $44,000, with full State of Indiana benefits, including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance options; free parking; paid holidays and vacation, sick and personal days; and participation in the Public Employees Retirement Fund.
