Summary/Objective:

The Nurse Supervisor works in a mental health hospital and serves as an assistant to the Director of Nursing Services for a large nursing department or serves as the overall coordinator and professional consultant for nursing services in a non-departmental hospital.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Organizes distribution of all nursing staff to the various wards and units ensuring adequate 24-hour, 7-day/week coverage;
  • Assists with and makes recommendations regarding the quality of subordinates’ performance, appropriate performance evaluations and appropriate selection, hiring and disciplinary actions;
  • Assumes responsibility of Director of Nursing Services in Director’s absence and/or provides the central coordination of nursing services with hospital;
  • Meets with subordinate registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and attendants to explain policies and procedures, disseminate information and maintain coordination and consistency among the several treatment units/wards/services;
  • Meets with directors, consultants and/or representatives of other treatment and support services to coordinate programs and procedures, to solve problems and to maintain consistent treatment approaches;
  • Serves on a variety of administrative committees representing nursing services;
  • Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of supplies or equipment and physical changes in buildings or grounds to enhance treatment environment;
  • Supervises and/or executes effective orientation, classroom and on-the-job training;
  • Attends and leads interdisciplinary treatment team meetings;
  • Makes recommendations regarding the purchase of supplies or equipment and physical changes in buildings or grounds to enhance treatment environment.

Preferred Experience:
Requirements:
  • Thorough knowledge of, and ability to direct others in, accepted professional nursing principles and practices;
  • Thorough knowledge of behavioral concepts as they relate to, and affect, mental retardation, mental illness or gerontology;
  • In-depth knowledge of, and ability to plan and change programs and procedures to comply with, state and federal laws, regulations and pertinent standards related to nursing practice, patient care and patient rights;
  • Practical knowledge of modern methods of organization, supervision and program direction;
  • Ability to plan, execute and/or direct in-service training programs;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with subordinate staff, patients, families and the entire hospital staff as necessary;
  • Ability to organize, reorganize, evaluate and adjust work of professionals, paraprofessionals and support nursing staff;
  • Ability to work with other treatment service staff and directors to coordinate procedures and enhance overall patient care;
  • License to practice nursing in the State of Indiana as a registered nurse.
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
