Role Overview: 

This position is directly responsible for the maintenance and operations of critical infrastructure for INDOT’s Traffic Management.  INDOT’s Traffic Management Division maintains a computer network for all of the highway message boards, cameras, roadway sensors, 2 dispatch centers, multiple public facing webpages, traffic/video feeds to all central Indiana TV stations as well as data feeds to multiple mapping and traffic providers (WAZE, Google Maps, etc).  This network also maintains communication with INDOT’s traffic signal systems.  The network engineer position is responsible for the maintenance and operations of the switches, servers and overall operations of the computer network that keep this critical infrastructure functional. 

 

Location:
This position is with INDOT’s Central Office in Indianapolis.

 

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $61,022.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

 

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Provide day two support for networking repairs, replacements and refreshes. Equipment repairs include supportive equipment such as UPS and PDU.  
  • Position uses but not limited to tools such as Solar Winds Net Flow Traffic Analyzer, Orion, OPNET, Secure Shell, TFTP, etc. 
  • Standardize (both hardware and software), optimize and stabilize the network and network environment which includes closet environment, power and cable management statewide.  
  • Perform security management of network resources via authentication, authorization, accounting, and detection.  
  • Provide ticket system updates, creation and closure and Tech Support case creation as needed.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

What You'll Need for Success:

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Must have advanced knowledge of routing, switching, remote access and wireless protocols. 
  • Experience working with Cisco routing, switching wireless and/or remote access systems. 
  • Advanced knowledge of all guidelines, policies and procedures related to multi-protocol services. 
  • Advanced knowledge of multi-protocol network environment. 
  • Requires use of current best practice and security guidelines for network equipment deployment, management and removal. 

You must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment: 

  • Provide teamwork with others who share network management responsibility as well as assisting other teams and contractors who support Indiana State Government Technology.

A degree is not required. However, at least 2 years of experience in computer technology, networking, or related field applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

This role may be utilized in a supervisory capacity based on agency needs.
