This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $24,128.  Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.



NBS Data Specialist

The NBS Data Specialist assists the STD Prevention Program with performing essential record-keeping of STD case investigations and laboratory information. This position will also assist with the processing of high priority records to maintain compliance with CDC federal grant requirements in a fast-paced work environment.

A day in the life

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Performs data entry for STD morbidity received from out of state into the STD Prevention Program database; appropriately sends STD morbidity to STD districts as needed.
  • Performs data entry and processes in state and out of state Reactors in the STD Prevention Program database for investigation purposes.
  • Enters requested data received from out of state in the STD Prevention Program database for record search information purposes.
  • Returns phone calls from other states record searches within 1 business day.
  • Processes the Out of System records within the STD Prevention Program database queues at least twice daily.
  • Processess all District Online CDR forms within the SWIMSS Application on a daily basis.
  • Develops and maintains the Interstate Communication filing system.
  • Maintains accuracy of Interstate Records by performing reconcialiation efforts at least twice monthly.
  • Maintains accurate contact information for Interstate Communications Control Records Roster.
  • Performs out of state record searches on Indiana residents that need laboratory history or treatment confirmation for disease investigations and enters this data into the database as needed.
  • Assists with developing policies and procedures as it relates to NBS Interstate Communications as well as assisting with updating current policies and procedures to maintain best practices.
  • Assist the STD Epidemiologist with data quality assurance activities as needed.
  • Assist the STD Epidemiologist with coordinating/disseminating information regarding STD Reports to Disease Intervention Specialists.

What we're looking for
  • Working knowledge of databases used for reporting and storage purposes.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced work environment and keep multiple projects going at once.
  • Basic knowledge of agency program terminology and special regulations.
  • Ability to learn and comprehend STD case investigations and laboratory information, including (but not limited to): chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis information; in addition to recommneded treatments for all diseases.
  • Ability to contact other state STD programs cordially and professionally, either through written or verbal communication.
  • Ability to complete, with 80% passing or higher, CDC's federal training for STD Programs called "Passport to Partner Services" and Track D, in person training. Ability to maintain this knowledge and help others learning this information.
