Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $52,312.00, but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

About the Job:

The purpose of this position is to serve as a technical and administrative supervisor for the Media Prep lab, Containers, and Central Receiving area within the Indiana State Department of Health Laboratories. You will be responsible for maintaining compliance to ISO 17025:2017, EPA and CLIA requirements throughout the supervised areas. You will maintain/oversee electronic storage of records, formulations, orders, and ordering using SharePoint, and also responsible to plan and implement cross training in the supervised area to assure sufficient staff coverage. You will report to the Division Director of the Environmental Microbiology Laboratories. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Monitors, assigns and coordinates the work of subordinate employees as well as provides technical assistance in order to establish continuity in staff responsibilities;
  • Provides laboratory services to agency staff, local health departments, other state and federal agencies;
  • Establishes and incorporates into daily operations, division standards and policies insuring subordinates follow all requirements for quality control adherence;
  • Responsible for insuring that new staff are adequately trained and competency assessed  before being allowed to perform work on their own;
  • Ensures staff are aware of federal and state requirements and rules for laboratory work (e.g. ISO 17025:2017, Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act—CLIA)
  • Compiles monthly and annual reports in order to make informed decisions for future resource needs;

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Ability to train and supervise subordinates and the multiple tasks and direct their efforts toward meeting section goals;
  • Ability to track use of laboratory supplies and research avenues to provide high quality services for the least cost to the agenc
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information both verbally and in writing and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory safety standards and procedures in order to maintain a safely operating laboratory environment;
  • Broad knowledge of basic laboratory preparation techniques (dilution culture media) as well as equipment operation (centrifuges, microscopes, pipettes, autoclaves, and pH meters).
  • Broad knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of biological, physical and life sciences;
  • Broad understanding of programmatically responsible laboratory equipment and how to troubleshoot when data is questionable;
  • Thorough understanding of any applicable federal and state laws and rules that relate directly to the agency mission;

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
