Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $39,910.00.  Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

About the Job:

Microbiologist is responsible for coordinating and performing the full range of microbiological examinations and analyses, recording, interpreting, and result reporting of tests on samples which may include but not limited to foods(raw and processed) including meat, poultry, Grade A milk and other dairy products, canned and fresh vegetables and fruits, and other food related products. Additionally, this position will rotate through other areas of the lab that may include Virology/Preparedness, Clinical Microbiology, and Environmental Microbiology. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Conducting microbiological examination of food and food related specimens which includes the isolation and identification of microorganisms associated with food borne illness or indicators of food processing cleanliness.
  • Maintains laboratory record system of submitted samples.
  • Evaluates, interprets, and validates laboratory results and reports findings to the submitter.
  • Develops and maintains sample inventory storage systems.
  • Conducts quality control checks on laboratory methods, materials, and equipment in compliance with the requirements stated in the FDA 2400 series for the Official Examination for Grade A Milk products and ISO/IEC 17025:2005 for food testing.
  • Assists with preparation of statistical reports from data compiled on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis.
  • Participates in evaluation of new products used in laboratory work.
  • Rotates in other laboratory areas and maintains competency in areas where trained.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of microbiology and related sub-specialties.
  • Specialized knowledge of current scientific methods and testing procedures and the ability to apply them when seeking solutions to public health laboratory problems.
  • Specialized knowledge of and ability to use a full range of standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus, and automated techniques of analysis.
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles.
  • Aware of state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies concerning the program area (i.e. FDA, USDA-FSIS). 
  • Ability to meet requirements for personnel certification as a dairy product analyst pursuant to the FDA 2400 series.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information both verbally and in writing and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Ability to satisfactorily participate in proficiency testing programs.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports.
  • After hours, weekend and holiday work may be required.
