Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $41,496.00 but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

About the Job:

You will manage the state metrology laboratory and its service programs as well as maintain the State's standards of mass, volume, length, and temperature while performing precision calibrations of mass standards using sophisticated weighing designs on precision load balances.  You will also participates in state of the art measurement sciences with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the laboratory auditing program.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Performs precision calibrations of mass standards using  sophisticated weighing designs on precision equipment
  • Calibrates thermometers, load balances and calculates corrections for air buoyancy effects. Incumbent also certifies the accuracy of volume measurements by using displacement and gravimetric methods.
  • Calibrate all state and local department weighing and measuring devices every two years.
  • Maintains  the State Metrology Laboratory and its service programs associated with NIST standards as well as protect and maintain the State standards of mass, volume, length and temperature. 
  • Provides technical assistance for state and local weights and measures officials and industry technicians.;
  • Prepares calibration reports, documents, and statistics for NIST and National Voluntary Laboratory Accreditation Program (NVLAP) annually;
  • Performs advanced mathematical calculations using higher mathematics such as algebra, geometry, calculus and statistics to solve problems and calculate uncertainties.
  • Prepares technical reports on all new measurement techniques, attends trainings, reviews literature, and consults with other state metrologists and NIST metrologists on measurement and calibration problems and issues;
  • Develop measurement techniques and procedures meeting NIST measurement system requirements.

What You'll Need for Success:

​This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Must possess National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Metrologist certification prior to employment or be able to successfully complete NIST metrologist mandatory training and succesfully pass the Metrologist certification exam within the first twelve months of employment..
  • Knowledge of mathematical calculations  using algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics.
  • Be able to enter, transcribe, record, store, and maintain information in written and electronic form;
  • Ability to use a computer;
  • Knowledge of inspection, calibration, and analysis of weights and measures standards and procedures.
  • Operate equipment necessary for movement of large weights
