About the Indiana Department of Insurance (IDOI):

The purpose of the Indiana Department of Insurance is to protect Hoosiers as they purchase and use insurance products to keep their assets and their families from loss or harm. Consumers may need assistance with certain claim situations or just help in understanding how their policies work. Our other primary obligation is to monitor the financial solvency of the insurance companies domiciled in Indiana so that the legal promises made in insurance policies are honored. To these ends, our Department staff is committed to providing exceptional customer service for both our consumers and our companies, and to maintain a fair and objective viewpoint as we examine each issue and circumstance within our jurisdiction.

About the Job:

The Legal Assistant provides administrative support services to the Indiana Department of Insurance's Legal Division, including the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsel, and staff attorneys.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Track tasks and projects for the Legal Division, including monitoring of deadlines and prompting of next actions when needed;
  • Provide administrative support such as typing and copying correspondence; maintaining spreadsheets; filing; scheduling meetings; receiving, opening, screening, and distributing Legal Division mail; and maintaining calendars;
  • Perform legal research when requested;
  • Maintain all tracking systems for invoices, public records requests, and financial services documents;
  • Provide backup executive administrative support to the Commissioner of the Department of Insurance;
  • Perform related duties as assigned by the General Counsel or other Legal Division attorneys.

What We're Looking For:

  • The ideal candidate for this role has at least two years of administrative assistant experience. 

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Strong time management and writing skills.
  • Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Professional telephone demeanor.
  • Ability to manage a large volume of projects, including monitoring of due dates and prompting of attorneys when a response is required.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Awareness of ethical concerns, including the need for confidentiality.
  • Ability to prepare reports of technical or specialized nature.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
