Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $28,366 annually but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

About the Job:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the Chemistry Laboratory in Sample Receiving, Sample Preparation and other support tasks. The position also may include basic testing of environmental samples for Chemistry

A Day in the Life:

Sample Shipping and Receiving

  • Prepare sample bottles for shipping
  • Open received sample boxes and login samples to LIMS
  • Check pH of environmental samples received. Log all pH information
  • Add appropriate preservative if needed. Record in LIMS
  • Check all received sampling paperwork or Chain of Custody forms for accuracy and completeness.
  • Check Turbidity for Metals Samples. Record in LIMS. Adjust pH as necessary.
  • Provide backup to staff in the Central Receiving Area of the Laboratories

Sample Preparation

  • Receive Reagents and Update Chemical Inventory
  • Digest Samples for Metals
  • Extract Samples for Pesticides, Herbicides, Water Disinfection By-Products, Pharamaceutical Analysis

Sample Analysis

  • Total, Dissolved and Suspended Solids Analysis
  • Biochemical Oxygen Demand Analysis
  • Other Analyses as needed

Sample Reporting

  • Keep track of IDEM Sample Delivery Groups reporting schedule
  • Generate draft reports from LIMS
  • Prepare reports for Fluoride and Nitrates

Other Duties

  • Glassware/Plasticware cleaning

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Broad knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles
  • Broad knowledge of chemistry equipment such as pH meters, spectrometers and pipettes
  • Ability to check and maintain proper Chain of Custody Forms
  • Ability to work effectively with co-workers in a team environment to perform the routine login and processing of environmental and other samples
  • Ability to conduct a wide range of established laboratory procedures
  • Ability to maintain laboratory records in compliance with regulations
  • Ability to cross-train in other testing areas to maintain work flow in times of staff shortages and workload surges
