Salary Statement:

This position traditionally starts at $28,366 per year and may be commensurate with education and work experience.

About the Job:

The purpose of this position is to assist the IDOH Laboratory by providing clients/customers, internal and external, with needed supplies. Internal clients require media to complete essential chemical and microbiology monitoring tests. External customers request testing kits to submit clinical and environmental samples to the IDOH Laboratory for testing. These tasks provide essential support services that allows the laboratory staff to perform their functions in public health investigative and surveillance efforts. The incumbent in this position performs a variety of investigative, customer service, and production oriented tasks in the Media Laboratory, Central Receiving Laboratory, and Containers Section of the Indiana State Department of Health Laboratory.


A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • With assistance of the Laboratory Support Supervisor, assess daily production needs and prioritize individual daily tasks between the Laboratory Support Sections.
  • Maintain a strong communication with all members of the ISDH Laboratory Support Group.
  • Monitor Media Laboratory internal customer ordering system and prioritize daily/weekly media preparations.
  • Prepares specialized culture media for a variety of laboratory examinations.
  • Operate and troubleshoot automated laboratory instrumentation.
  • Perform standard laboratory maintenance activities (temperature checks, instrument calibration, and daily/weekly quality controls).
  • Ensure Media Laboratory remains a clean and sterile environment by maintaining a cleanly work environment.
  • Receive and processes requests for clinical specimen collection/submission kits and environmental sample test kits.
  • Monitor and assist in managing required inventory within the Media Laboratory and Containers Section.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external ISDH Laboratory customers.
  • Provide customer focused service to any external customers visiting the ISDH Laboratory.
  • Ensure ISDH Laboratory testing groups are promptly notified when specimens/samples are received and that they are stored properly
  • Ensure accurate transcription of external customer information during specimen receipt or clinical/environmental test kit order.
  • Perform duties in support of operations (specimen receipt and log in, filing laboratory testing results, and preparation of biochemical reagents.
  • Perform duties associated with record retention which includes maintaining laboratory forms (submission and instructions), quality control records, specimen receipt records, and specimen preparation checklists.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Must have an overall knowledge of the ISDH Laboratory lab support functions as they relate to the services provided by the Laboratory Support Group.
  • An ability and desire to provide excellent customer service to internal and external ISDH Laboratory customers.
  • A willingness to be flexible with daily responsibilities.
  • A willingness to work within a changing environment and a desire to offer suggestions for process improvements.
  • Excellent communication skills including written, verbal, and electronic.
  • Develop specialized knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and laboratory safety.
  • Broad knowledge of basic laboratory preparation techniques (sterile techniques, detailed documentation, and quality control requirements).
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory equipment operation (autoclaves, laboratory scales, automated sampling instrumentation, and pH meters).
  • Ability to logically troubleshoot basic laboratory instrumentation issue.
  • Broad knowledge and compliance with all State and Federal laws, rules and regulations pertaining to laboratory operations (e.g. CLIA, HIPPA, Blood Borne Pathogen, etc.)
  • Basic knowledge of chemistry, microbiology, common laboratory procedures and laboratory terminology associated with assignments in the laboratory.
  • Ability to read and follow instructions for the preparation of culture media, reagents, test kits, and specimens.
  • Ability to conduct a wide range of established laboratory procedures both manual and automated.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy when filling customer orders and completing media formulations.
  • Must have or develop a working knowledge of the packaging and shipping requirements of DOT, USPS, UPS, FedEx and IATA.
  • Ability to perform administrative support tasks such as inventory, data entry, and report preparation and filing.
