Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $28,366.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience.

 

About the Job:

​​As the Laboratory Technician, you will fulfill a support function, including specimen receiving and specimen processing, for the Serology Division of the Indiana State Department of Health Laboratories.

A Day in the Life:

​The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Performs specimen receiving in laboratory Central Accessioning room.
  • Sorts specimens in laboratory Central Accessioning to ensure timely delivery to individual testing areas.
  • Accurately and consistently matches patient specimen tube information with form/LIMSNet entry
  • Accessions specimens via StarLIMS.
  • Uses StarLIMS to investigate and trouble-shoot problems with specimen submission entries to correctly identify the appropriate solution to amend the error.
  • Routinely informs supervisor of problems with submitter specimen submissions in a timely manner to prevent a delay in testing such specimens.
  • Performs all pre-analytical processing of specimens in preparation for testing by microbiologists.
  • Accessions and prepares specimens in other testing areas when necessitated by staffing shortages.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment in the laboratory.
  • Performs data gathering for certain types of laboratory equipment and maintains the appropriate records for quality control purposes.
  • Assists supervisor with maintaining a sufficient laboratory supply inventory by informing her of current supply levels before supplies become depleted.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • Specialized knowledge to conduct a wide range of established laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail to ensure testing accuracy.
  • Specialized knowledge of StarLIMS.
  • Ability to cross-train in other testing areas to maintain work flow in times of staff shortages and work load surges.
  • Specialized knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and laboratory safety.
  • Basic knowledge of current advancements in laboratory specimen preparation and/or analysis as well as relevant equipment.
  • Broad knowledge and compliance with all hospital, state, and federal laws, rules and regulations pertaining to laboratory operations (e.g. CLIA, HIPPA, Blood Borne Pathogens, etc.).
  • Ability to assist supervisor with preparation for external inspections.
  • Ability to maintain laboratory records in compliance with CLIA regulations.
  • Ability to assist in administrative support tasks such as inventory management, report filing and report preparation.
