About the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA):
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) was established as a separate state agency by the Legislature in 2005. Administratively, ISDA reports to the Lt. Governor, who also serves as Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. Major responsibilities include advocacy for Indiana agriculture at the local, state and federal level, managing soil conservation programs, promoting economic development and agricultural innovation, serving as a regulatory ombudsman for agricultural businesses, and licensing grain firms throughout the state. 
 

Salary:

The salary for this position begins at $47,476 and may be commensurate with education and experience.

About the Job:

Leads the ISDA Indiana Grown (IG) program including management of all IG employees and contractors as applicable.  Provides project leadership, strategic direction, and implementation of multiple strategies to drive economic development and marketing for Indiana growers, processors, and markets; with a specific focus on the IG program and local foods initiative.  Responsible for statewide general outreach, economic development, and speaking engagements on topics pertaining to local agriculture product development, value chain coordination, and IG.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • General IG program management and administration;
  • Supervise IG staff, intern(s), and contract employee(s) as applicable, including recruitment, hiring, discipline, goal setting, and training;
  • Management of IG funding, budgeting, payments, and invoicing in collaboration with the Economic Development Division Director;
  • Management of all program contracts, grant agreements, and MOUs;
  • Oversee IG social media and website: https://www.indianagrown.org/;
  • Rule/ policy development (IG member terms of service, etc.);
  • Lead IG strategic planning;
  • Foster strategic partnerships;
  • support IG commission;;
  • Point of contact for Commission members, coordinate meeting dates and agendas. When needed serve as ISDA director's designee and ex officio chairperson of the Commission;
  • Onboard/ approve new IG members;
  • Provides presentations or speeches to expand membership or brand recognition;
  • IG Spokesperson with: members, constituents, stakeholders, partnersm media, government (local health depts., ISDH, FDA, USDA, etc.);
  • Openeing. promoting opportunities with: restaurants, grocery, wholesalers, institutions (universities, hospitals, etc.), Distributors, processors, farmer's markets, other retailers;
  • Promoting agritourism;
  • Lead signature programming/ events: Indiana State Fair, Monumental Marketplace, Shop IG: https://www.indianagrown.org/shop-local/, IG airport store, IG for schoolsm IG day at the Statehouse, media appearances.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • 4-year college degree or equivalent
  • Broad knowledge of the program area
  • Ability to consider long-term goals and direction, implementing strategies to reach those goals
  • Working knowledge of the organization of the agency and of state and federal agencies dealing with the programs
  • Working knowledge of food safety and grocery standards
  • Ability to proactively develop and carry out program activities
  • Ability to  communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships
  • Working knowledge of local Board of Health requirements

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
