About the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA):   
The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) was established as a separate state agency by the Legislature in 2005. Administratively, ISDA reports to the Lt. Governor, who also serves as Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. Major responsibilities include advocacy for Indiana agriculture at the local, state and federal level, managing soil conservation programs, promoting economic development and agricultural innovation, serving as a regulatory ombudsman for agricultural businesses, and licensing grain firms throughout the state. 
  
Salary:  
The starting salary for this position is $47,476 per year and may be commensurate with education and/or experience.  

About the Job:

Coordinate economic development outreach activities to agribusinesses in the State of Indiana. Identify needs and provide information, networking/learning opportunities and encouragement to agribusinesses interested in growing, entering new markets and expanding sales.

A Day in the Life:

  • Serve as a liaison between the Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) and all types of agribusinesses and communities, with a focus on business development and communicating targeted economic development strategies/research (Dairy, Hardwoods and others as needed).
  • Complete research and strategic assessments on Indiana agricultural industries and regularly solicit input on the state of the industry and industry needs from stakeholders and agribusinesses.
  • Work directly with the ISDA Economic Development Director to create and implement a plan for agribusiness retention and expansion focused on diversification, value-added opportunities, etc.
  • Develop and maintain partnerships and relationships with multiple external entities including agricultural associations, education organizations, business execnot-for-profitr profit entities, business resource providers and federal partners.
  • Work together with other state departments/agencies to understand, navigate and communicate services and rules pertaining to agribusiness (Indiana Economic Development Corporation, Indiana Board of Animal Health, Indiana Department of Environmental Management).
  • Develop and execute engagement activities such as forums, webinars, tours, surveys, listening site visits, area meetings, etc. that facilitate awareness of federal, state, regional and local resources and enhance connections within Indiana’s agribusiness ecosystem.
  • Assist the Indiana Grown team and its members in realizing growth opportunities.  
  • Continually strive to promote the advantages of investment, value-added opportunities, diversification, storytelling, etc. for agribusinesses within Indiana.
  • Follow-up on plans, programs, policies and procedures to ensure uniform compliance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business, public administration, engineering or other relevant field. Master’s degree desired.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant industry experience. Equivalent combination of experience and relevant graduate degree is acceptable.
  • Understanding of agriculture and agribusiness operations, especially as it relates to Indiana.
  • Able to analyze and evaluate the needs of businesses and communities and the effectiveness of outreach services. 
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft office suite systems.
  • Able to work independently.
  • Able to multi-task.
  • Able to work under multiple deadlines.
  • Able to work effectively with others. Able to work with local, state and federal officials.
  • Able to monitor and track various department metrics.
  • Attention to detail in reports and funding applications.
  • Ability to establish and achieve multiple goals.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
