The Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more. 



About the Indiana War Memorials Commission (WMC):
The Indiana War Memorials Commission was created by the Legislature in 1923 with the mission of designing, building and subsequently operating the Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District. The Commission was also given the task of managing the Soldiers & Sailors Monument. Today the Commission is responsible for the Indiana War Memorial, the Soldiers & Sailors Monument, Veterans Memorial Plaza, American Legion Mall with the World War II, Korea and Vietnam Memorials, University Park, the USS Indianapolis National Memorial, the Medal of Honor Memorial, and the 9/11 Memorial.



This is a part-time internship (around 25 hours per week) with an hourly rate of $16.24.

White River State Park (WRSP) boasts world-class attractions, destinations, and experiences offering something for nearly every interest and visitor. You can find greenspaces, trails, trees, and waterways that may exist at any state park. In addition to nature’s wonderland, you find cultural, educational, and recreational Attractions and Events in our urban getaway’s 250-acres in downtown Indianapolis. The Governor's Public Service Summer Interns will work within the Park Development Commission in the areas of Community Outreach, Events, Marketing, and Special Projects. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

•    Assist events team with onsite event operations and logistics 
•    Assist marketing and communications director with content creation for social media platforms.
•    Attend planning meetings with events team 
•    Contribute to the marketing of WRSP and WRSP greenspaces 
•    Research and assist with creating media pitches and press releases, establishing strong relationships with media and clients, following industry trends and developments, and more 
•    Participate in meetings with WRSP staff to collaborate on special projects and initiatives 
•    Assist with community outreach initiatives and participate in outreach events 
•    Assist in maintaining and developing relationships and partnerships in the Indianapolis community 
•    Work occasional shifts in the park’s Visitor Center
•    Perform special projects under the Executive Director 


What You'll Need for Success:

  • To be considered for this position, you must be enrolled currently in an accredited college or university AND have completed at least two years (2) years of college-level education credits 
  • Must have a flexible schedule and be prepared to work weekends, early mornings, and late nights 
  • Must be able to work outside, rain or shine 
  • Demonstrate people and management skills 
  • Demonstrate creativity – including internal and external marketing and project materials creation 
  • Demonstrate ability to thrive in a challenging and fun environment with many unknowns and changing objectives 
  • Detail-oriented 
  • Demonstrate project management skills to develop and execute multiple projects simultaneously to meet overlapping deadlines 
  • Demonstrate above average organizational/problem-solving/decision-making skills 
  • Demonstrate strong verbal and written communication and presentation skills 
  • Demonstrate ability to work independently as much as necessary – even without guidance from agency staff at times, and other knowledge of the Indianapolis and tourism sector 
  • Demonstrate creative and strategic thinking 
  • Must have the passion of a self-starter and quick learner
  • Moderate travel outside of the office setting is necessary and required.
  • Reliable transportation is required.
  • Please note overall much more time is required outside in various weather conditions and for long periods of time than a typical office setting.
  • Interns are required to spend majority of time interacting with the public.
  • If there is downtime, interns will help other departments within WRSP.
  • Depending on needs, interns will assist other WRSP departments.


Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
