Mission Statement:

ISDA will support growth in Indiana agriculture by serving as an advocate at the local, state and federal level; defining and nurturing economic opportunity in the food, fuel and fiber sectors; and enhancing the stewardship of natural resources on agricultural land. ISDA reports to the Lt. Governor, who also serves as Indiana’s Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development. ISDA is also a member of the Governor's Cabinet. 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 and hour, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

About the Job:

The Indiana State Department of Agriculture (ISDA) is looking for a summer intern for the Indiana Grain Buyers and Warehouse Licensing Agency (IGBWLA).  This internship will provide hands-on experience and a comprehensive view of the working relationship between regulatory affairs and Indiana’s grain industry.  The IGBWLA intern will work closely with the division’s Director and Deputy Directors to assist with daily operations.  The IGBWLA intern will also be assigned its own individual project(s) that will relate specifically to the division in achieving its overall mission.

A Day in the Life:

The IGBWLA intern will serve in a support role to the team based out of the division’s downtown Indianapolis office.  Day trips throughout the State may also occur as needed to meet licensees and to assist field team members in their work.  Specific work assignments may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Conduct financial and inventory inspections on division licensees with IGBWLA team members. 
  • Analyze and interpret the economic impact of Indiana’s grain industry and/or specific grain operations.
  • Research and draft potential processes and/or procedures that enable the division to be more consistent in its work, analyses, and communication of grain operations. 
  • Review and interrupt the financial wellbeing of grain operations through the division’s grain licensing processes.
  • Assist the IGBWLA director in preparing and/or participating in meetings and conferences. 
  • Assist other ISDA divisions during the Indiana State Fair.
  • Other specialized projects as assigned.

What You'll Need for Success:



  • Education: currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at an accredited university or college
  • Work Experience: 0-2 years’ relevant work experience 
  • Technical Skills: Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 
  • License(s): valid State issued driver’s license
  • Other: The ability to work independently with little supervision as well as the able to work well with others on team assignments


  • Education: currently pursuing a degree in agriculture economics, economics, and/or business concentration
  • Work Experience: 2+ year(s) in the grain industry
  • Other: The ideal candidate will have a background in agribusiness, accounting, or business management.  Knowledge/interest in learning about agriculture or agriculture-related field of study is beneficial.  Knowledge/interest in learning about a commodity business and/or commodity trading is beneficial
