The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.

Role Overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic and detail-oriented intern to support two divisions: Communications and Strategic Workforce Planning. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in strategic communications, talent management, and workforce planning initiatives. As an intern, you will support the development of communication strategies, help manage workforce data, assist in planning initiatives, and contribute to key projects that drive business success.  
 

This internship offers valuable exposure to strategic workforce planning and internal communications at a public agency. You will have the opportunity to make a direct impact, while gaining experience in both workforce management and communication strategies. Salary Statement

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

 

Location

This position is located in IOT Offices, Indiana Government Center North, Downtown Indianapolis.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • Draft internal communications, presentations, and reports related to workforce planning and organizational strategy.
  • Conduct research on industry best practices, workforce trends, and strategic initiatives. Analyze workforce data to support planning and decision-making.
  • Support various workforce planning and communication projects, including internal surveys , talent management programs, and organizational development initiatives.
  • Create and manage content for internal and external communications channels (e.g., newsletters, intranet, presentations, social media, etc.).
  • Assist in coordinating agency events, meetings, workshops, and presentations.
  • Provide general administrative support including scheduling, documentation, and data entry.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Academic work in public policy, public affairs, communications/media, human resources, workforce management, government, political science, business, or related fields is preferred.
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline 
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a highly detail-oriented and fast-paced environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Ability to thrive in an environment of continual feedback; address stressful situations with poise, understanding, and tact.
  • Experience with photography, video editing, and graphic design are a plus.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite and Canva is a plus.
  • Familiarity/Knowledge of Associated Press style (writing/editing).
  • Familiarity/Knowledge of social media marketing/campaigns/messaging (LinkedIn and Instagram).
  • Demonstrated focus on creativity and quality of work.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
