Salary: This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $16.24 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

 

Location: This position is located in INDOT's Central Office, Indianapolis.

About the Job:

This position will serve as an intern for the Environmental Services Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will assist the Ecology and Waterway Permitting Office with the development of an ArcGIS based data collection system. The data collection system will be used to preserve data from guano testing, mist net collection, expert identification, and other sources that were collected because of INDOT projects. This information will be used by USFWS, IDNR, and INDOT for species specific research and project development. Data added will be collected from field studies, guano DNA analysis, and other sources. Intern will work with USFWS, IDNR and INDOT in developing data fields. This position will have the opportunity to participate with the INDOT protected species consultant in related field work as well as the opportunity to participate in a plant identification course.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Develop ArcGIS data collection tool, data research, entry (75%). Assist with field work associated with protected species related field work (20%). Participate in plant identification training (5%).

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Applicant must be obtaining a degree in an Environmental Science, or a closely related field and have experience with ArcGIS.
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
