About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
About Indiana Department of Environmental Management:
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management’s Office of Land Quality is seeking a Learning and Development Intern to join our agency in summer 2025. The intern will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to the mining and reconciliation of information from IDEM databases and paper files to perform data compilation and synchronization across various datasets. The resulting information, along with new research, will be utilized to assess; the current status of active and closed Remediation Services Branch sites, post-closure obligations, and evaluate the potential presence of emerging contaminants.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Location:
This position is located in IDEM Offices, Indiana Government Center North, Downtown Indianapolis.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
- Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
- Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
- Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
- Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
- Conducting research on environmental investigation and remediation sites
- Assist with reconciling and analyzing information contained within Agency databases
- Creating succinct site summaries for public GIS publishing
- Meeting and solving problems with key cross-program data stakeholders in IDEM
- Creating reports of collected data to pinpoint patterns, areas of common concerns, and/or show the financial benefits of the Program’s oversite and closure of sites potentially leading to site redevelopment
- Assess closed sites for the potential presence of emerging contaminants

- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
