About the Governor's Summer Internship Program (GSI):
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
About Indiana Department of Environmental Management:
Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.
Role Overview:
The purpose for this position is to research and verify locations and parcel information for Antique Landfills for the Permits Branch and complete other projects assigned by the Antique Landfill Coordinator. This position will be responsible for the integration of archival records, ranging from the late 1960’s to the late 1990’s, with our modern, digital recordkeeping.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
Location:
This position is located in IDEM Offices, Indiana Government Center North, Downtown Indianapolis.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
- Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
- Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
- Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
- Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
- Research parcel information and IDEM records found in IDEM files and databases.
Compile results to request a site entry to GIS and IDEM databases. - Creating digital waste boundaries in GIS.
- Comparing historic hardcopy archives to records in our Virtual File Cabinet (VFC).
- Preparing and sending records to VFC.
- Attend meetings with landfill representatives.
- Read incoming documents and outgoing responses.
- Becomes familiar with the landfills and the environmental regulations that apply to them.

What You'll Need for Success:
- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
- Academic work in related field

- Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
- Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
- Ability to conduct well-informed research
- Ability to solve complex, critical problems
- Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
- Visit a few Antique Landfills
- Learn landfill rules and guidance
- Learn environmental and regulatory concerns unique to Antique Waste
- Learn about fate and transport topics
- Meet with key stakeholders in the realm of state government
- Work with ArcPro GIS software
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
