The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. About Indiana Department of Environmental Management:

Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy. We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

 

Role Overview

The Office of Air Quality (OAQ) Permits Branch is seeking an intern to join our team in the summer of 2025.  The purpose of this internship position is to gain an understanding of the permit development process and the related air regulations.  As part of this internship, the Employee will review applications for air permit approvals which may include MSOP, FESOP and Part 70 permits; and modifications, revisions and amendments to these permits, provide feedback on training material, attend meetings with stakeholders, and attend source inspections. 


Salary Statement

The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.

 

Location

This position is located in IDEM Offices, Indiana Government Center North, Downtown Indianapolis.

 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
  • Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
  • Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations 
  • Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
  • Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives
  • Researching and applying state and federal regulations.
  • Draft permit approvals, which will include drafting conditions that are practically enforceable and assure compliance with state and federal air pollution laws and regulations.
  • Review and work with source to make necessary adjusted to calculations provided by sources, and draft technical support documents associated with assigned permit applications. 
  • Collaborate with other permit writers and inspectors to develop an understanding of different industrial and manufacturing processes and air pollution control devices.
  • You may have an opportunity to attend a public meeting to hear concerns regarding a permitting action.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
  • Academic work in related field
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline 
  • Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels 
  • Ability to conduct well-informed research
  • Ability to solve complex, critical problems
  • Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
