Role Overview

 

The Programs Intern for the Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) plays a crucial role in advancing new and existing initiatives within the agency’s Programs Department (Artist Services, Arts Learning, and Community Services) helping deliver impactive service to Indiana’s artists and their communities. Through hands-on experience and guided support, the Incumbent will contribute to the development and enhancements of programs, supporting the agency’s mission to foster the arts and provide meaningful service to its constituents.

 

As part of the Governor’s Summer Internship (GSI) Program, the Incumbent will gain exposure to state government operations, contributing directly to the IAC’s impact while building professional skills and connections. The incumbent will be a participant in bi-weekly cohort activities and programs that promote professional growth, sector exposure, and networking with peers and state officials, offering an immersive and comprehensive experience in government communications.

 

The ideal candidate will bring a passion for arts advocacy and community engagement, be adaptable, and can bring a proactive approach to supporting multiple programs. The candidate should have strong research and analytical skills, enabling them to identify, assess, and share valuable opportunities with stakeholders.

 

This opportunity is an in-person internship program and will take place primarily at the Indiana Arts Commission’s office located at the Indiana Government Center North (100 N Senate Avenue) in Indianapolis.


Salary Statement

The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.

A Day in the Life:

  • Artist Services: Support new program and service development within the Artists Services area. This includes:

  1. Conducting research and disseminating information on national and regional grants, residencies, and employment opportunities for Indiana artists through the agency’s newly revamped Artists Hub.

  2. Providing support to the evaluation team involved in assessing core artist services programs.

  3. Assisting with the startup of a new regional artist's micro-grant program.   

  • Community Services: Assist in the development of new and ongoing programs within Community Services area. Responsibilities include:

 1. Contributing to the launch of the revised Creative Community Pathway program by generating informational materials, guidelines, and applications, as well as fielding inquiries and participating in site visits.

  2. Supporting the Every County Funded program through research, program management assistance, and evaluation. 

  • Arts Learning: Provide support for existing Arts Education and Creative Aging programming. Responsibilities include:

  1. Assisting in the rollout of research findings of these programs.

  2. Documenting and analyzing program results to support the agency’s continuous improvement efforts.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Enrollment & Academic Standing: Must be a current student at an accredited college or university, having completed at least one year of undergraduate education. Fields of study such as Arts Administration, Public Policy, Education, or related areas are preferred.

  • Research & Analytical Skills: Demonstrated ability to conduct research, identify, analyze, and present information relevant to program development and evaluation.

  • Project Management: Capable of managing multiple projects and deadlines effectively. Organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to privatize task and work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office 365 Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), and familiar with online research tools. Experience with database management and digital content creation tools is a plus.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, includingthe ability to develop informational materials, respond to inquiries, and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.

  • Commitment to Public Service and Arts Advocacy: Enthusiasm for supporting the arts in Indiana and working within the public sector. Commitment to promoting arts accessibility across the state.

 

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:

This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
