Role Overview:
The Governor’s Summer Internship Program (GSI) is designed to give college students real-world, hands-on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the program will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume-building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is seeking an Appeals Intern to join our agency in the summer of 2025. DWD’s Appeals Division is responsible for conducting unemployment insurance, liability, fraud, waiver of overpayment, and garnishment hearings and for rendering legal decisions. The Intern must be currently enrolled in an accredited law school. The Intern will be assigned to support Administrative Law Judges, Liability Administrative Law Judges, and clerical staff with the review of appeals, scheduling, research projects, and case management. The ideal candidate for this internship is a law student looking for experience working for state government or in administrative law.
Salary Statement:
The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those who do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
A Day in the Life:
As an Appeals intern for DWD, you'll gain valuable hands-on experience with:
- Observing Administrative Law Judge hearings.
- Utilizing Westlaw to research legal issues.
- Learning to prepare and review an electronic case file.
- Learning Federal quality criteria, statutory authority, and rules of professional responsibility that govern U.I. Administrative Law Judges.
- Assisting with preparing training and presentations that will be used for continuing legal education requirements.

What You'll Need for Success:
- Must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate with an accredited post-secondary institution and have completed at least one (1) year of undergraduate education.
- Academic work in related field
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to analyze data sets related to discipline
- Ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels
- Ability to conduct well-informed research
- Ability to solve complex, critical problems
- Ability to review and make recommendations on proposed changes to relevant policies and procedures
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
