About the Indiana Department of Revenue (DOR):
The Indiana Department of Revenue team has over 700 staff members from 13 locations across Indiana. We work collaboratively with the Indiana Governor's office, the General Assembly, state agencies, individuals, business owners, corporations, tax practitioners, and tax program participants to administer Indiana's tax laws. DOR administers over 65 tax types and annually processes nearly $21 billion of tax revenue. Our mission is to serve Indiana by administering tax laws fairly, securely, and efficiently.

About the DOR Appeals Team:
The DOR Appeals team serves as an impartial arbiter of various protestable actions taken by DOR. Taxpayers who wish to appeal the assessment of tax, or the denial of a refund can file a protest with the Appeals team and may request a hearing. Hearing Officers are independent finders of fact who write final determinations published in the Indiana Register and binding against DOR and the taxpayer. Taxpayers who disagree with DOR’s final determination may appeal those decisions to the Indiana Tax Court.
Salary:
The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.
About the Governor's Summer Internship:
The summer internship program provides participants the opportunity to work with state agency officials, as well as participate in co-curricular components to enrich their experiences. Interns spend at least 50 percent of their time on predetermined projects that enhance college-level skills and abilities. The co-curricular components of the program ensure competitive, reputable, and inclusive experiential learning. Interns participate in cohort activities on a weekly basis designed to enable:
- Professional growth and preparedness for the workforce upon graduation
- Exposure to many facets of state government
- Networking and camaraderie development among the cohort
The DOR Tax Appeals Intern will attend administrative hearings, conduct legal and factual pre-hearing research, learn about the administrative hearing process, and draft written rulings such as Letters of Findings that are published in the Indiana Register. Interns may also perform research and writing for other areas of the Legal division as needed. You will gain valuable experience in administrative law and procedure.
What you will gain from this internship:
- Interns will learn about the administrative tax hearing process, including attending administrative hearings and conducting legal and factual pre-hearing research.
- Interns will assist the Appeals Section attorneys (Hearing Officers) with the drafting of written rulings that get published in the Indiana Register.
- Interns may also perform research and writing for other areas of the Legal division on an as-needed basis.
- By performing these duties, interns will gain valuable experience in administrative law and procedure, legal research and writing, state and local tax theory, and statutory and regulatory interpretation.
This internship requires that you are in your second year at an accredited law school.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are:
- Identify and execute one major project related to agency needs and academic area of study
- Create, develop, and sustain the programmatic efforts for the assigned discipline
- Analyze data and feedback to provide recommendations
- Partner with other relevant stakeholders to promote and enhance the quality of projects
- Collaborate with State of Indiana agencies to ensure effective implementation of internal and external initiatives

Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period
