About the Indiana War Memorials Commission (IWMC):
The Indiana War Memorials Commission was created by the Legislature in 1923 with the mission of designing, building and subsequently operating the Indiana War Memorial Plaza Historic District. 
The salary for this position starts at $13.21 per hour.

About the Job:

Indiana War Memorials Commission is currently seeking a Part-Time Gift Shop and Museum Attendant. The Gift Shop and Museum Attendant performs standard duties of a gift shop or museum attendant; handles merchandise transactions, assists in general housekeeping and display maintenance, provides outstanding customer service, maintains a professional manner at all times when greeting visitors, and maintains awareness of special events or promotions and is comfortable relaying information to visitors. In addition, the Part-Time Gift Shop and Museum Attendant should be able to answer general questions about downtown Indianapolis and nearby attractions along with basic historical information about the Indiana War Memorials Commission properties, monuments, and memorials.

This is a part-time position with rotating shifts. Hours at the gift shop are mainly Wednesday - Sunday 10:30 am - 5:30 pm, with extended hours up to 9 pm on weekends. Event support hours can include evenings or weekends until midnight. This position will work a maximum of 60 hours per pay period or 30 hours per week. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Preparing reports involving tabulations and balancing of daily gift shop and tower sales
  • Maintains cash drawer and applies simple arithmetic calculations
  • Assist in processing and replenishing inventory and monitoring merchandise levels
  • Assist in floor moves, display maintenance, merchandising and housekeeping which might involve the climbing of 331 steps to the Observatory tower if the elevator is down
  • Answers inquiries about facility and merchandise
  • Answers inquiries about downtown area attractions and provide basic directions to/from IWM properties to hotels &/or restaurants
  • Assist in setup and preparation of event venue space and A/V system when needed
  • Must be on time for duty

What We're Looking For:

  • The ideal candidate for this role has 1 year of work experience and a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • The ideal candidate will also be able to support the events administrator for evening or weekend events
  • Customer service experience preferred

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Must possess excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Computer/cash register experience required
  • Ability to read, count, write, and make simple arithmetic computations to accurately complete all documentation
  • Possess strong attention to detail and problem solving skills
  • Must possess valid driver's license, high school diploma or GED
  • Ability to be tactful in dealing with persons over the telephone and in person
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and work varied hours/days, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
