Salary Information:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $46,000,00 but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

About the Job:

The Food Scientist Supervisor supervises the Food Scientists within the Indiana Department of Health Food Protection Division’s Retail Program.  You will serve as a specialist in public and environmental health, enforcing laws and rules applicable to food protection, and assisting local health departments and other units of local government with training, technical assistance, and resolution of problems of variable complexity or questionable jurisdiction.  You may also be called upon to investigate or resolve public health or environmental problems that do not fall into the purview of other State or local agencies. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:  

  • Works with the Director of Food Protection to set short and long range goals and priorities based upon Division goals; Will also modify as needed to meet changing demands.
  • Supervises and participates in the reviews and approval for efficiency and conformance to Indiana Retail Food Establishment Sanitation Requirements (410 IAC 7-24).
  • Works with the local health departments to support rule understanding and to provide inspection training.
  • Provide supervisory support to the Indiana Retail Program. Including recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.  
  • Provide leadership during the compliance and enforcement process. May testify in administrative hearings and courts of law about the status of facilities subject to laws and rules applicable to food protection. 
  • Consults with owners, operators, government officials, or their representatives to discuss administrative and technical requirements for proper design and construction of food establishments.
  • Updates and assists in development of proposed administrative rules and policies, in conjunction with Director of Food Protection for approval.
  • Provides technical training and presentations to staff, other agencies, food industry, and essential businesses when requested.
  • Attends all federal level training and educational meetings to stay abreast of current retail food code development. Represent the State of Indiana in national conference.
  • Oversees all budget related issues and assist in federal grant reporting process.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Biology, Microbiology, or closely related field is required. 
  • Five (5) years of related experience and three years of supervisory experience is strongly preferred. 
  • Extensive knowledge of state and federal laws, rules, technical guidelines, and policies concerning public health, especially involving wholesale food establishments. 
  • Thorough knowledge of the Department of Health organization, function, principles, policies and procedures related to the activities of the Food Protection Division. 
  • Ability to establish program goals and objectives, and to plan and coordinate varied and changing operations to meet those objectives.
  • Ability to establish harmonious relationships with industry, local, public and private agencies. 
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow.
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.
  • Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to maturely and professionally handle verbal abuse, and threats to life, limb and personal property.
  • Ability to analyze collected data, and to prepare complete and logical reports in support of administrative or court action.
  • Ability to effectively administer meetings with groups, task forces, and other bodies who may be stakeholders in food safety law.
  • Ability to direct statewide crisis reaction situations, such as a special sampling initiatives, foodborne disease outbreaks, consumer complaints, suspected tampering, natural disasters, etc. on short notice with effective results.
  • Must possess a valid Indiana driver’s license and be able to travel.

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
