About the Job:

This position will serve as the environmental scientist for the Addressing Asthma from a Public Health Perspective CDC cooperative agreement, including some aspects of grant management,  program development and health education.  This position will assist with updating the State Asthma Plan in accordance with input from various statewide environmental stakeholders and partners, develop and implement/ maintain environmental based asthma programs, work with statewide partners to disseminate environmental health based asthma education materials,  and communicates environmental based health education needs, concerns, and resources for the purpose of achieving program goals and objectives.

A Day in the Life:

  • Assists with Asthma Program activities, which includes ensuring timely and successful submission of interim and annual grants reports.
  • Develop training module for yearly asthma statewide school IAQ coordinators training.
  • Develop and maintain asthma related trainings for Head Start and 5 Star programs.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains environmental health materials for statewide dissemination.
  • Gives technical assistance to schools and state offices regarding the ISDH IAQ Rule.
  • Conducts home environmental assessments for poorly controlled asthma cases
  • Develop training module for local health department staff.
  • Works with agency Epidemiologists to identify and utilize existing data related to asthma to develop regional trainings and online educational opportunities.
  • Tracks outcomes for the environmental health related objectives and activities of the state plan.
  • Writes reports on key findings, and disseminates information to CDC, key partners, stakeholders, and the public, as needed through written reports and oral presentation.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates health education activities related to asthma and environmental triggers.
  • Coordinates the development of work plans/timelines, and oversees project implementation as it relates to environmental health education activities.
  • Promotes the adoption of evidence-based programs and policies related to environmental health education.
  • Provides technical assistance and environmental health education consultation to partners (including statewide asthma coalition and workgroups, Indiana community health centers, local health departments, schools, and other community organizations) on resources, evidence-based public health practices and programs.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with federal, state, and local health departments, and other stakeholders.
  • Act as technical consultant to other program staff and partners on environmental components of asthma management.
  • Works with, and coordinates activities and trainings with other safety and environmental health employees within ISDH.
  • Represents the agency on various professional boards/committees concerning asthma and environmental health.
  • Travel in- and out-of-state, as required, by the objectives in the work plan and as approved by the Director of the Division.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree plus 3 years or Masters Degree plus 1 year or higher in environmental health, occupational safety, or public health with environmental health emphasis.
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental health, air pollution and control, environmental toxicology, environmental risk assessment, environmental health policy, occupational health and safety, and related fields.
  • Previous experience in a school environment helpful.
  • Experience developing specialized training programs.
  • Experience with air quality analyses related to health.
  • Knowledge of computers and competent in using software applications including: Microsoft Word, Publisher, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with health care and public health professionals, policy makers, agency staff, and the general public both verbally and in writing.
  • Advanced experience in the writing of formal reports, articles and oral presentations.
  • Working knowledge of organizational structure, administrative process, and quality improvement.
