Salary Information:
This position starts at a base salary of $38,688.00 annually.


About the Job:

Staff in this position serve as a project manager in the Federal Programs Section, Site Investigation and Superfund Programs with the responsibility for the coordination of environmental site assessment and oversight of remediation activities at complex hazardous waste sites that are an actual or potential risk to human health and the environment. The project management duties include providing a technical point-of-contact for assigned sites and implementing a variety of tasks related to conducting environmental assessments and project oversight including, but not limited to, environmental media sampling, data analysis, technical report writing, work plan and report preparation, technical reviews, etc. The Environmental Manager 2 reports directly to the Section Chief and is expected to work independently as the lead project manager to conduct site assessment and Superfund site oversight work following EPA and IDEM guidance.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Work independently as a project manager to support the State's position, conduct site background searches, identify and provide environmental cleanup requirements, review and prepare reports, and manage budgets and schedules associated with Superfund and Site Assessment sites.
  • Perform project management duties as required to ensure the effective and timely management of sites.
  • Ensure procurement and oversight of contractors, as needed, to perform site activities.
  • Maintain site files and submits required site activity reports, semiannual grant reports, site logs, briefings, etc.
  • Conduct document reviews in cooperation with technical support staff and provides technical review comments to appropriate individuals, businesses or agencies.
  • Conduct field work, including contractor oversight, sample collection and site inspections, as required.
  • Participate and represents IDEM in public, technical and legal meetings.
  • Participate in community relations activities.
  • Coordinate with internal technical, management, and legal staff to make appropriate program decisions.
  • Obtain required training to perform assigned responsibilities. 
  • Participate in continuing education by attending online seminars, workshops, conferences, and optional training courses.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:  

  • Knowledge of environmental remediation technologies, environmental science, and environmental policy.  
  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of remediation programs preferred.  
  • Must have the ability to coordinate and motivate professional and support personnel, and communicate with diverse internal and external customers as needed.  
  • Must be able to coordinate work on multiple tasks simultaneously and cooperatively with staff.
  • Required to complete a medical monitoring physical exam, complete the OSHA Hazardous Waste Worker 40-hour training and will occasionally be required to wear personal protective equipment when working in the field. 

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
