This purpose of this position is to assist engineers in validating collected data for Statewide Inventory of Geotechnical Assets. Assist in researching state of practice for inventory and asset management in other US states. Coordinate information requests between Consultants and District/Central offices. Review, collect and relay information received.


This position is limited to 180 days. 

About the Job

Serves as an Engineering Technician for INDOT Field drilling operations and/or Laboratory testing operations. Assists with various drilling/coring/CPT rig operations, tests on materials incorporated into INDOT construction or maintenance contracts.  Incumbent will perform sample collection, preparation, lab & field equipment maintenance and various clean up as instructed in field and in the lab.  Incumbent will also enter test data into a computer spreadsheet and possibly check other techs data input.  

A Day in the Life
  • Assist in locating borings, mobilizing drilling equipment and tools to perform subsurface investigations. 
  • Assists with SPT borings, collects Split Spoon, Shelby tube, rock core samples and performs DCP, CPT tests, etc. to complete the given task and report to the Drilling operation Supervisor. 
  • Performs visual classifications on soil samples, and prepares field boring logs.
  • Assist in preparation and testing construction materials according to quality procedures and specification requirements;
  • Communicates and coordinates with field and lab technicians, supervisors and engineers;
  • Performs routine equipment maintenance, sample and trash throw out and clean up, including floor sweeping and counter wiping.
  • Records test results and completes testing records, including the use of INDOT computer system and software;
  • Records, calculates and checks field data using INDOT computer software on a daily basis;
Preferred Experience:

Must have a high school diploma plus two years of college in civil / construction engineering
Considerable computer skills with Microsoft Office Software required
Ability to use Spreadsheets for data validation
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing;
Ability to work with specialized testing & material terminology
Must have a valid Indiana Driver's License
