Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites

The mission of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites is to celebrate, explore and steward all that is authentically wondrous about Indiana.  The ISMHS is a forward-thinking, unparalleled resource for learning about and appreciating Indiana and its role in the world. This role traditionally hires at a rate of $10.00 per hour. 


This position serves as an Engagement Specialist Intermittent within the Engagement Department at the Indiana State Museum working as assigned exhibit within the Fix: Heartbreak and Hope gallery to engage museum guests and assist with visitor questions and concerns, safeguard artifacts, and assist with programming as assigned. 

Essential Job Responsibilities:
  • Enhance the visitor experience in the museum by engaging visitors within the Fix gallery, assisting with visitor questions and concerns, and facilitating program areas as appropriate
  • Assist with informal evaluation as appropriate
  • Coordinate opening and closing museum galleries with museum security
  • Safeguard museum artifacts within the special exhibit gallery by communicating gallery and visitor issues and concerns to museum security and other museum staff as appropriate
  • Assist with museum related demonstrations and programs
  • Help visitors understand the complexities of substance abuse disorder and recovery
  • Serve as a visitor resource to point visitors to appropriate resources if needed
  • Bachelor’s degree or enrolled in degree program preferred
  • Background in behavioral health, nursing, counseling, social work, or public health preferred
  • Ability to communicate information to multiple audiences, including adults in a wide variety of formats
  • Comfortable engaging visitors in an emotional setting
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and some evenings.
  • Exhibit excellent public speaking skills, enthusiasm and creativity while interacting with visitors of all ages and abilities
  • Must be a team player
  • Ability to maintain a professional appearance and attitude
Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

If this is an Intermittent position, the position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
