The Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites (ISMHS) is a statewide museum system with 12 locations including the Indiana State Museum in downtown Indianapolis and 11 historic sites in the Indiana communities of Evansville, Corydon, New Albany, Rome City, Madison, Fountain City, Geneva, New Harmony, Nashville, Vincennes, and Metamora.

The starting salary for this role is $15.00 per hour.


About the Job:

As an Engagement Specialist (Part-Time), you will serve within the Engagement Department at the Indiana State Museum working as assigned exhibit within the galleries to engage working as assigned within the galleries and public spaces of the museum to engage and interact with visitors, assist with facilitation of daily programming, respond to visitor questions and concerns, safeguard objects, and monitor artifacts and exhibit components. You may be asked to represent the museum at various outreach events or assist with programs. You may assist in managing and training of museum volunteers. 

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 


Museum operations

  • Coordinate opening and closing of museum galleries with museum security
  • Monitor artifacts and exhibit components
  • Communicate gallery and visitor issues and concerns to security and other staff as appropriate
  • Support Visitor Services in providing a welcoming environment for all museum visitors
  • Manage customer complaints, incidents, and accidents
  • Take the lead in emergency situations to ensure safety of museum guests
  • Clean and sanitize museum galleries and public spaces daily

Visitor Engagement

  • Enhance the visitor experience in the museum by engaging and interacting with visitors, assisting with visitor questions and concerns, and facilitating daily programs
  • Implement scheduled and spontaneous activities and programs for diverse audiences including children, families, and adults
  • Conduct informal and formal evaluation of exhibit spaces 
  • Evaluate daily engagement programs through formal and informal evaluation tools
  • Assist Engagement department staff with development and facilitation of programs and events as needed
  • Provide excellent customer service 

Working with Museum Volunteers

  • Train and oversee volunteers who present museum programming and staff exhibit spaces
  • Provide assistance to volunteers as needed

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
