About the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance (DLGF):
The Department of Local Government Finance is responsible for ensuring property tax assessment and local government budgeting are carried out in accordance with Indiana law. The Department is charged with publishing property tax assessment rules and annually reviewing and approving the tax rates and levies of every political subdivision in the state, including all counties, cities, towns, townships, school corporations, libraries, and other entities with tax levy authority.



The salary for this position typically starts at $55,000 per year.

About the Job:

The Indiana Department of Local Government Finance’s Deputy General Counsel position will provide legal advice and expertise to the Department in a number of areas including: compliance with existing laws and regulations, administrative law, contracts, promulgation of administrative rules, and general guidance to local government officials.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:


  • Serving as an assistant to the General Counsel and an advisor to DLGF regarding legal issues;
  • Conducting legal research on issues faced by DLGF;
  • Representing DLGF staff in certain administrative proceedings;
  • Drafting contracts, ensuring compliance with public records requests, and assisting with legislative inquiries;
  • Acting as legal liaison to DLGF divisions;
  • Drafting guidance to local government officials;
  • Conducting comprehensive reviews and analysis of yearly legislative changes;
  • Other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need For Success:

  • A Juris Doctorate degree;
  • Admission, in good standing, to the Indiana Bar;
  • Knowledge of and experience with administrative law, statutory interpretation, and Indiana legislative procedure;
  • Excellent skills and proven proficiency at legal research, communicating both orally and in writing;
  • Knowledge of and experience with State of Indiana contracts and rulemaking procedures;
  • Presentation experience;
  • Ability to research, comprehend, and distill complex legal information to non-legal professionals.
