Role Overview:


The Cloud Engineer is a subject-matter expert in cloud technologies and champions cloud-native solutions to help state leadership and  agencies to effectively and efficiently use cloud resources.  You will work with MPH staff, partner agencies, and vendors to instill architectural thinking that optimizes solution delivery and expands the use of digital resources.  Our goal is to help others create best practices.


A Day in the Life:


The essential functions of this role are:

  • Provides operational support for the Cloud platforms ensuring data security, availability, and performance.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of cloud architecture, capabilities, implementation requirements, and future roadmap of cloud platforms.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of compliance standards and regulatory requirements supported by the assigned cloud platform.
  • Provides overall monitoring of the standards, procedures and integration of systems through Cloud Architecture design.
  • Assists in the analysis of business and user needs, documents requirements and revises existing system logic difficulties.
  • Demonstrate ability to collaborate between business units, architecture, operations, and security on the development and implementation of solutions that meet operational and compliance standards as well as meeting relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with assigned customers in order to help them meet their business and technical needs.
  • Identify and maximize cost reduction opportunities by eliminating duplication of existing tools and services, while driving additional use cases for existing capabilities across the enterprise.
  • Assists in the development of strategic plans based on customer needs.
  • Partner with MPH product owners and senior stakeholders to develop cloud native, hybrid cloud, and multi-cloud strategies to optimize the value of MPH services.
  • Assists in the delivery of technical business solutions and products to customers.
  • Assists in meeting expectations of customers, peers, vendors, and management.
  • Assists customers in evaluation, procurement and implementation of technical business systems solutions and products.
  • Consults with and makes recommendations to Business Consultancy/Planning, Project Management and associate user groups to define information processing requirements, evaluate technology needs and formulate solutions.
  • Evaluates technology and products to determine the feasibility of adding to agency standards.
  • Develops work plans for assigned projects and supervises their execution.
  • Provides guidance and reviews the work of team members on special projects.
  • Facilitates discussions for long-term planning implementation.
  • Identifies and explores the potential strategies for long-term planning implementation.
  • Demonstrate exceptional personal judgment, written and verbal communication skills, including comfort with explaining complex matters to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Works with and provides guidance to information systems personnel or user agencies for maximum computer utilization.
  • Collaborate with MPH product owners to optimize current service offerings in relation to adoption requirements, budgetary allocation, new features, resources, processes, and technology impacts.
  • Mentor and coach technical MPH staff in the transition to supporting cloud operations.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Advanced knowledge of tools, techniques, and best practices of cloud service providers like Amazon Web Services; Google Cloud Platform; and Microsoft Azure.
  • Advanced knowledge of supporting infrastructure as code (IaC) and helping development teams leverage DevSecOps and cloud native development.
  • Extensive knowledge of capacity planning and disaster recovery.
  • Experience with a foundational knowledge of tools, techniques, and best practices of identity and access management controls.
  • Experience with a foundational knowledge of supporting hybrid cloud deployment scenarios.
  • Flexibility with changes to schedules and workflow deliverables impacting both self and team, and situations managing competing deadlines and priorities.
  • Ability to work successfully with a wide variety of stakeholders, including government representatives and vendors, and across teams of varying sizes.
  • Ability to compare existing technologies, tools, resources, and capabilities in use with those in the marketplace in order to provide financially and practically sound assessments for optimizing a technology service portfolio, including elimination of redundancies and guidance on new purchases.
  • Ability to perform logic analysis.
  • Review, understand, and advocate for MPH's strategic goals toward providing secure and reliable infrastructure, systems, and services for the State of Indiana. Position supports driving adoption of tools already procured by the State of Indiana while rationalizing tools that may overlap and evaluating new technologies.
  • Ability to lead, encourage and influence others to perform.
  • Ability to read and understand complicated technical manuals.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to apply theories, principles and methodologies to existing architecture.
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates with the AWS Certified Solutions Architect Professional or Microsoft Certified:  Azure Solutions Architect Expert certifications.
  • Ability to guide and coordinate the work of others.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

This position traditionally starts at $73,606 - $80,966 and may be commensurate with education, training, certifications, and experience.
