Salary:
The salary for this position traditionally starts at $52,312.00 per year but may be commensurate with education and/or experience.

 

About the Job:

This position functions as a bench-level supervisor with both technical and administrative duties in the Laboratory.  This role consults with other employees reviewing work reports to assure compliance with state and federal regulations, checking accuracy in laboratory procedures and making recommendations concerning the results of laboratory work.  This position reports to the division director of the IDOH Chemistry Laboratories. 

A Day in the Life:

​The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Maintains personal method competencies in testing area as assigned
  • Supervises the staff and activities of the testing area and ensures staff competencies are current
  • Ensures the implementation of proper and up-to-date analytical methods.
  • Oversees crosstraining of all staff.
  • Ensures that adequate supplies are maintained at all times to meet needs.
  • Maintains and oversees a quality assurance program for areas supervised.
  • Ensures that results are appropriately reported and reports are distributed.
  • Serves as a consultant to customers and others with questions concerning analysis.

What You'll Need for Success:

This person must have the following requirements to be considered for employment: 

  • At least three years of analytical chemistry related to the area supervised.
  • At least two years of supervisory experience in an accredited or certified testing laboratory
  • Experience with ICP and ICPMS required.
  • Thorough knowledge of and ability to apply federal, state and local laws and regulations;
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and means of interpreting results;
  • Broad understanding of the purposes of chemical testing equipment and their proper usage;
  • Considerable knowledge of the various sciences including chemistry and public health; specialized knowledge of procedures utilized in technical training in areas of inspection, interpretation and quality control; 
  • Broad knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of chemistry;
  • Ability to train and manage subordinates performing diverse tasks and to coordinate and monitor their programs.;
  • Ability to conduct extensive research, interpret and apply other research findings, and report all information such as technical letters and memoranda to division staff;
  • Broad knowledge of laboratory safety standards and procedures in order to maintain a safely operating laboratory environment;
  • Ability to determine the significance of an analytical finding;
  • Ability to serve as an expert witness in court cases involving work supervised.
