Salary Information:

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $35,620.00 but may be commensurate with job experience.

About The Job:

The Chemist serves as a junior level chemist in the Chemistry Laboratory of the ISDH Environmental Chemistry Laboratories.  You will perform chemical analyses on various environmental, clinical or food matrices and other materials submitted with minimum supervision.  You will assist the supervisor by performing tasks as assigned and reports directly to the laboratory supervisor.

A Day In The Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Performs chemical and physical analysis on various clinical, environmental or other submitted materials to determine presence and/or level of contaminants or toxic substances using a variety of instruments using management approved procedures.
  • Performs chemical and physical analysis on various food matrices or other submitted materials using sophisticated instrumentation and management approved procedures for compliance with FDA and USDA regulations and adherence to legal standards of identity.
  • Performs highly complex chemical analysis on clinical matrices such as blood or urine to determine the level of contaminants or toxic substances using sophisticated instrumentation in compliance with CLIA requirements.
  • Adheres to Quality Assurance guidelines.
  • Maintains proficiency and technical expertise by passing Proficiency Testing (PT) samples.
  • Maintains assigned instrumentation in working order; performs preventative maintenance and repair on laboratory equipment.
  • Completes all required paperwork; maintains instrument logbook, prepares technical reports and updates standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Acts as Receiving Agent for the ISDH Chemistry Laboratories if assigned this duty.
  • Maintains a safe and uncluttered work area.
  • Trains and cross trains on other analytical procedures within the laboratory.
  • Meets Testing Personnel Responsibilities according to the § 493.1495 Standard within 2 years of hire date.

What You'll Need For Success:

  • Bachelor's degree in science is preferred.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others both within and outside of the laboratory.
  • Broad knowledge of good laboratory practices (GLP) and good automated laboratory practices (GALP).
  • Ability to use computers to operate equipment, for data reduction and quality control and report generation.
  • General knowledge of principles and practices of clinical, analytical, organic, inorganic and radiochemistry.
  • General knowledge of related scientific areas such as physics, and statistics.
  • General technical knowledge of and ability to operate highly complex laboratory equipment.
  • Practical knowledge of laboratory safety.
  • General knowledge of appropriate state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies relative to the specialty area.
  • Ability to evaluate procedures and make comparisons of methods.
  • Ability to pass an FBI background check.
  • Ability to appear in court as an expert witness.
  • Ability to keep abreast of new developments in the field.
  • Ability to solve analytical problems in related scientific areas.
