About the Department of Natural Resources:


The mission of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources is to protect, enhance, preserve, and wisely use natural, cultural, and recreational resources for the benefit of Indiana's citizens through professional leadership, management, and education.


Role Overview:


The DNR Building Architect ensures code compliance for all DNR buildings (new construction, renovations, and emergency repairs) across all DNR properties.   You will also provide technical information, guidance, and review of rehabilitation projects.  You will work in the main office at the Indiana Government Center in Indianapolis with occasional outings to DNR locations to complete site evaluations.

A Day in the Life:


The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Prepare contract documents that comply with building codes, safety laws, and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) regulations, directly affecting the public and private sectors.
  • Prepare and present preliminary designs of building and programming documents.
  • Assist with the construction cost estimate to enable and provide agencies with information necessary to establish construction budgets.
  • Research and conduct field inspection of conditions for existing buildings for rehabilitation projects and preventative maintenance needs of design projects.
  • Assist in preparations of applications which may include but are not limited to historical preservation, archaeological review for the purposes of budget preparation, obtaining permits, and adherence to building codes.
  • Review shop drawing submittals of design projects and plans of architectural consultant firms and prepare evaluation comments to determine conformance with contract requirements.
  • Perform environmental analysis of facility site prior to the design of the building.
  • Prepare architectural details to define construction quality and technology.
  • Design size, arrangement, and characteristics of spaces to be included in the building program.
  • Develop materials list and specifications for requisition.

What You'll Need for Success:


You must meet the following requirement to be considered for employment:

  • Knowledge of the theory, design and practices of architecture.
  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques of building construction, repair and rehabilitation.
  • Thorough knowledge of regulations, laws, statutes, codes and standard governing building design and construction.
  • Working knowledge of building energy conservation regulations and methods.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical aspects of construction as they affect architectural planning.
  • Working knowledge of regulations and methods for providing access to all space within and about buildings for the physically handicapped.
  • Ability to prepare, evaluate and present design programs, preliminary sketches and final design documents.
  • Ability to review contractors’ billings for accuracy and content.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to become registered as a Professional Architect in the State of Indiana

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.

This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $67,314. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
