Indiana State Department of Health

The Indiana State Department of Health’s mission is to promote and provide essential public health services for a healthier and safer state.


This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $47,476.  Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

Healthy Hoosiers Foundation:

In 2013, the Indiana General Assembly and the Governor authorized the Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) to establish a non-profit subsidiary corporation, IC 16-19-3-30.  The Healthy Hoosiers Foundation will carry out objectives aligned with the ISDH goals of improving Hoosiers' health, including programs intended to reduce infant mortality, increase childhood immunizations, reduce obesity, and reduce smoking rates.This position oversees the operations, fundraising, budget, partnerships, and goals of the HHF and is responsible for administering all grants issued by the foundation.

A day in the life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Effectively generate revenue for the foundation using appropriate marketing techniques
  • Establish and monitor the foundation budget, serving as the controller
  • Administer grants issued by the foundation, ensuring recipients comply with grant requirements
  • Develop and maintain relationships with key health and community partners across Indiana and identify opportunities to collaborate on initiatives to improve Hoosiers' health
  • In collaboration with HHF Board of Directors and State Health Commissioner, establish short- and long-term business plans and goals for foundation
  • Establish priorities, procedures and deadlines for accomplishing foundation goals
  • Maintain current working knowledge of laws, regulations, methods of planned giving, fundraising, not-for-profit management, and other rules, policies and procedures.
  • Manage procurement and contract execution for the foundation, in cooperation with state agencies and partners.
  • Develop agendas and coordinate and attend regular meetings of foundation Board of Directors
  • Recruit, train, and manage a group of volunteers as needed
  • Represent the foundation and its work at public events as appropriate
  • Educate stakeholders about the role of the foundation

What we're looking for:
  • Bachelor’s degree and minimum of 5 years experience as a proven leader in the public health or non-profit sector, including successful performance with program/department goals or master's degree (preferred) in health administration, public affairs, or related subject.
  • Broad knowledge and proven success in fundraising and philanthropy.
  • Thorough knowledge of government and non-profit operations and the relevant laws and best practices.
  • Advanced understanding of public health.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and organizational skills to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent ability to navigate complex or ambiguous situations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, particularly negotiation skill.
  • High energy, forward thinking, and creative individual with proven track record of success in working with diverse people.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
