Salary Information:

The starting salary for this position is $44,910.00 but may be commensurate with education and job experience.

 

About the Job:

As the Microbiologist, you are responsible for performing the full range of examinations and analyses, recording, interpreting, and result reporting of tests on on environmental air samples, human body fluids, tissues, clinical specimens, microbiological isolates, or environmental or food samples submitted to the Laboratory.

A Day in the Life:

This position is part of the Indiana State Department of Health Laboratory, Biological Preparedness Division, and will have in-depth knowledge and ability to perform laboratory associated assays or the ability to learn these techniques upon successful completion of competency testing. The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Handling, receipt and processing of operational, Quality Assurance, and proficiency samples.
  • Maintains chain-of-custody (COC).
  • Performs microbiological and molecular techniques, including DNA extraction and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), to identify and characterize pathogenic bacterial and viral   agents.
  • Enters data into computer-linked systems (LRN RM, BLaDE, SMS/DMS, Starlims).
  • Provides training on BioWatch protocols and procedures for new personnel/retraining requirements.
  • Documents COC, QA/QC, equipment maintenance and calibration, training and data results.
  • Adheres to QA/QC requirements in accordance with PH Laboratory quality management systems and the BioWatch Laboratory Quality Assurance Program Plan (QAPP). 
  • Archiving samples according to the established schedule.
  • Performs daily functions and internal proficiency tests and successfully pass external proficiency tests and audits as defined by DHS in the QAPP.
  • Analyzes daily external QA samples in accordance with BioWatch SOP’s and QA program guidance for screening and confirmatory assays.
  • Prepares written and oral technical reports, answer questions, troubleshoot equipment and reagent issues, and make recommendations to the supervisor for inclusion in comprehensive reports.
  • 24-hour monitoring, and available 24/7/365 with weekend and holiday work required.
  • Conducts examination of samples and/or reference samples for analyses such as, but not limited to, molecular or serological analysis and isolation/identification of microorganisms/toxins or their antigens/nucleic acids.
  • Rotates in other laboratory areas and maintains competency in trained areas.
  • Maintains laboratory record system of submitted samples & specimens and their possible referral.
  • Evaluates, interprets, and validates laboratory results and reports findings.
  • Develops and maintains specimen and supplies inventory storage systems.
  • Conducts quality control checks on laboratory methods, materials, and equipment.
  • Assists with preparation of epidemiological and/or statistical reports from data compiled on a daily, weekly, monthly, or annual basis.
  • Participates in evaluation of new products used in clinical/reference laboratory work.
  • Responsible for specimen processing, test performance and for reporting test results in accordance with the CLIA testing personnel 493.1495 Standard.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • High School Diploma or High School Equivalency (HSE) is needed for this position.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles, theories and practices of microbiology and related sub- specialties.
  • Specialized knowledge of current scientific methods and testing procedures and the ability to apply them when seeking solutions to public health laboratory problems.
  • Specialized knowledge of and ability to use a full range of standard technical equipment, complex scientific apparatus, and automated techniques of analysis.
  • Extensive knowledge of laboratory safety practices and principles.
  • After hours, weekend and holiday work required.
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical information both verbally and in writing and maintain productive working relationships.
  • Ability to satisfactorily participate in proficiency testing programs.
  • Ability to compile, analyze, evaluate, and prepare laboratory reports.
  • Aware of state and federal laws, rules, regulations, and policies concerning the program area (i.e. DHS, CLIA).
