About the Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (ISBVI):

 

The Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired has substantial knowledge and experience in educating students to master core curriculum and expanded curriculum that teaches them how to navigate their physical, social, and personal worlds.  Our expertise is accessed and used by local educators to improve the education of all of Indiana's children who are blind or have low vision.  Because of its strong reputation, the school attracts highly qualified administrators and educators, and students from other states whose parents move to Indiana so that their children can attend.

 

ISBVI is in the process of implementing a strategic plan to transition to a new, state-of-the-art campus.

 

Salary:

Role Overview:

 

The Assistant Principal works closely with the Principal to provide instructional leadership and support for academics.  You will assist the Principal in managing, evaluating, and supervising effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the education program consistent with the school's philosophy, mission, values, and goals.  You will engage in organizing and leading instructional programming, extracurricular activities, and outcomes-based evaluations.  You will also ensure a safe and orderly climate that supports office operations, emergency procedures, and student needs in physical, emotional, and behavioral health.

 

A Day in the Life:

 

The essential functions of this role are:

  • Establish and promote high standards and expectations for all students and staff for academic performance and responsible behavior.
  • Use effective presentation skills when addressing students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Assist with supervision of co-curricular and extra-curricular events.
  • Assist with tardiness and disciplinary issues.
  • Evaluate teachers and residential mentors as assigned per the current evaluation system.
  • Assist with interviews, selection, and orientation of new employees. 
  • Assist the Principal in managing, evaluating, and supervising effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the education program consistent with the philosophy, mission, values, and goals of the school including instructional programs, extracurricular activities, and discipline systems to ensure a safe and orderly climate, program evaluation, personnel management, office operations, and emergency procedures.
  • Establish a professional rapport with students and with staff that has their respect.
  • Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as requested by the principal.
  • Assist Principal in organizing and supervising procedures for identifying and addressing special needs of students including health-related concerns, physical, and emotional.
  • Inform the principal of any needs or concerns of the operation of the school.
  • Maintain visibility with students, teachers, parents, and community members.
  • Attend required committee meetings (e.g. pre-IEP meetings, accreditation, curriculum) and other school-sponsored functions.
  • Provide positive behavior support to students and staff.
  • Protect the confidentiality of records and information gained as part of professional duties.

What You'll Need for Success:

 

  • Master's Degree in Education, Special Education, or Education Leadership.
  • Valid license or emergency license through the State of Indiana in the Area of Administration/Supervision.
  • .Specialized knowledge of and ability to instruct and work with students at several developmental/behavior levels. 
  • Ability to evaluate educational, vocational, and developmental performance and progress of students and faculty. 
  • Ability to create and provide a positive learning environment conducive to and supportive of individual growth and development. 
  • Ability to actively participate in professional continuing education and training as instructed and approved by supervisor.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
