The Immunization Division is one of six divisions within the Public Health Protection and Laboratory Services Commission of the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH).  The IDOH Immunization Division is one of 61 states and US territories funded through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to develop, implement, assess, and promote immunization-related activities with the goal of achieving and sustaining high immunization coverage, reducing vaccination disparities, and decreasing the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases.  The IDOH Immunization Division is committed to the prevention of disease, disability, and death among Hoosiers across the lifespan through a collaborative approach to improve vaccination coverage and access to vaccines.

 

The Immunization Division is organized into four sections consisting of 33 staff: Immunization Information System (IIS) Operations, Division Operations, Vaccine Access and Management, and Immunization Assessment and Promotion. The ISDH Immunization Division Deputy Vaccine Access and Management Director (Deputy Director) will plan, manage, and coordinate all Vaccines for Children (VFC) and 317 provider vaccine ordering, management, and accountability functions to support the Vaccine Access and Management (VAM) section to achieve the grant deliverables associated with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cooperative agreement. This section includes the Quality Assurance (QA) team and Vaccine Ordering and Accountability (VOA) team, and two coordinators focused on adult/outbreak response and maternal immunization/perinatal hepatitis B prevention efforts. The incumbent assists in the management of the overall day-to-day operations and personnel of the Immunization Division as the Deputy Director to assure the successful achievement of the division’s mission, vision, and program objectives. The incumbent directly supervises four (4) staff and provides strategic direction for a team of thirteen professional staff (15).

About the Job:

The Assistant Director is involved with a variety of executive duties within a state agency or facility involving a high degree of discretion in interpretation, application and execution of a division’s policies and programs. In this position, you will supervise front-line supervisors or staff.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Review and evaluate organizational effectiveness, goal determination, and strategic planning, etc., makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Assist the Director with developing and coordinating plans and policies, resources, and mission as well as goals, vision and expectations of agency or program.
  • Provide guidance to agencies and the public regarding applicable laws and rules.
  • Supervise subordinate personnel including hiring, determining workload, and authorizing assignments, training, monitoring, and evaluating performance, and initiating corrective or disciplinary action.
  • Assist with monitoring agency or program budget including revenues, expenditures, and budget projections.
  • Communicate with news and other media and respond to media questions or requests in an appropriate public relations manner.
  • Coordinate with other government officials on planning issues.
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development.
  • Set expectation, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.
