Role Overview:
As an Accounts Receivable Accountant in the Accounts Receivable department you will be responsible for the timely and accurate creation of billing and collection of invoices due to INDOT. The Accounts Receivable Accountant is an essential position critical to the billing and receipt of INDOT funds from local agencies, INDOT vendors, and taxpayers. This position works directly with both internal as well as external customers, including the Treasurer's office, State Board of Accounts, and the Comptroller's office. This position is responsible for initially analyzing billing requests for accuracy of submittal, creation of invoices, creation of customer profiles, follow-up with billing requestors for additional information when needed, and organization of billing documents for long-term storage. The accountant is also the primary person who handles incoming phone calls for the accounts receivable department and performs collection on past due invoices by sending letters or conducting follow-up phone calls and emails. This position helps with additional accounts receivable job duties which may include filling in at the cashier desk to service walk-in customers, issuing receipts for payments, opening and sorting mail, logging payments in the agency cashbook under dual control, adding checks, organizing deposits to be submitted to the Treasury of State office, and taking payments over the phone.
Salary:
This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $37,648.00. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.
Location:
This position is located in INDOT’s Central Office, Accounts Receivable Department.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Post transactions to appropriate ledgers and accounts.
- Verify accuracy of all financial documents and records.
- Reconcile accounts and subsidiary ledgers with the general ledger.
- Prepare, correct, and adjust entries prior to closing accounts.
- Prepare periodic financial reports such as balance sheets and income statements.
- Ensure availability of funds before authorizing payment or submitting vouchers for payment to the State Auditor’s Office for approval.
- Prepare, edit, and verify electronic data processing entries and documents.
- Recommend changes in accounting policies and assists in developing accounting procedures.

- Foundational knowledge of theories, principles, and practices of public accounting.
- Foundational knowledge of agency function and organization.
- Foundational knowledge of the federal and state laws, procedures, practices and policies of governmental accounting and bookkeeping.
- Foundational knowledge of automated accounting systems.
- Ability to communicate, both orally and in writing.
- Ability to solve standard accounting problems.
- Ability to evaluate and recommend modifications to existing accounting methods and procedures.
- Ability to accurately perform arithmetic calculations.
- Ability to prepare clear, accurate and concise reports.
- Effective communication skills.
