About the Indiana Department of Administration (IDOA):

IDOA centrally manages activities relating to state purchasing, the vehicle fleet, state travel, real estate leases, property disposition, and the Government Center Campus, among others. In addition to agency support, the department provides assistance to minority, women, and veteran business enterprises interested in state contracting opportunities. Through its activities, IDOA helps to ensure the smooth function of state government, finding efficient and effective solutions to government-wide needs.

About the Job:

The Grounds Foreman is responsible for supervising work crews and taking an active role in performing a wide variety of routine of seasonal tasks to assist in the maintenance of state grounds. This individual receives general instructions and assists in setting assignment priorities.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

  • Checks and orders supplies and other equipment needed for jobs;
  • Directs and works with employees in accomplishing tasks;
  • Cleans wooded areas and riverbanks;
  • Plants trees, shrubbery and flowers;
  • Inspects landscapes and mows and cleans grounds;
  • Maintains roadways and hauls gravel, blacktop or oil;
  • Operates snow removal equipment on roads, sidewalks and parking lots;
  • Hauls television sets to repair shops and hauls and sets up beds and other furniture as need arises for one area to another;
  • Supervises spraying and pruning of bushes, vines, flowers and trees regularly;
  • Seeds, fertilizes and rolls lawns;
  • Repairs, installs and maintains all grounds equipment;
  • Replaces damaged or fallen signs and reflectors during snow, ice or fire emergencies and roof collapses.

What You'll Need for Success:

  • Broad knowledge of, and ability to apply, various grounds and roads maintenance practices;
  • Broad knowledge of landscaping and road repair techniques and procedures;
  • Ability to coordinate the work of others;
  • Ability to operate and repair trucks, tractors, snowplows, backhoes, pay loaders, bush hogs, chain saws and other grounds maintenance equipment;
  • Ability to prepare and use formulas for insecticides;
  • Ability to set up and maintain accurate reports and records;
  • Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to obtain a valid chauffeur’s license.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:

This role may serve as a team lead for an assigned work group.
