The Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.


Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. Listed salary is approximate. The hourly wage is $11.30.

About the Job:

This position will serve as a civil engineering Intern for the traffic engineering Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will report to the District Traffic Engineering Office at the Greenfield District.  

A Day in the Life:
  • Traffic analysis and safety studies at intersection and highway segments
  • Project scope development for future safety or mobility improvement
    • Preliminary summary, analysis, and recommendation based on the data collected
    • Preparation of documents including preliminary design, tables, charts, maps and figures for programming documents and maintenance work orders
  • Collect field data either alone or on a team at various locations around the district. This data could include:
    • Speed Study Data
    • Traffic Count Data
    • Other Traffic Related Data
  • Data entry and review of data in Microsoft Excel, Access and other programs 
  • Other duties as assigned
What You’ll Need For Success:
  • Working towards a Bachelor Degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Relevant work experience preferred
  • Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
  • Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
  • Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
  • Analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple projects
  • Ability to operate computer tools
  • Good research and writing skills
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
  • Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
Difficulty of Work:

The Intern’s work is broad in scope and requires the ability to work with many different individuals. The work requires the strong ability to manage one’s own time and to adequately prioritize job responsibilities. 


The Intern will be responsible for performing various traffic engineering related duties under the direction of the Greenfield District Traffic Engineer. This work will include, but is not limited to, traffic safety and mobility analysis, field data collection, office data collection, data entry utilizing various computer programs, preliminary data analysis, preliminary design document preparation, and other tasks as needed.  The intern will be assigned specific projects and work assignments.  Work and recommendations will be made to the supervisor.
