Role Overview:
This position is responsible for performing various traffic engineering-related duties under the direction of the Greenfield District Traffic Engineer. This work will include, but is not limited to, safety studies, traffic analysis, preliminary design, cost estimating, data collection, data entry utilizing various computer programs, preliminary data analysis, and document preparation. The primary goal is to plan a systemic safety improvement project for the district. However, the summer will involve a wide array of transportation work.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Traffic studies to evaluate safety and congestion at intersections and road segments
- Determine solutions to safety and congestion issues at intersections and road segments
- Preliminary CAD sketch solutions and perform cost estimates
- Data entry and review in Microsoft Excel, GIS, and other programs
- Assistance with data collection, including crash history studies and GIS Mapping
- Preliminary summary, analysis, and recommendation based on the data collected
- Preparation of documents, including tables, charts, maps, and sketches for project programming documents

What You'll Need for Success:
- Working towards a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field
- Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
- Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
- Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
- Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
