Role Overview:
This position will serve as a Bridge Inspection Intern for the Bridge Management Division of the Indiana Department of Transportation. The Intern will be responsible for a variety of division projects and support. The objective of the position is to provide a valuable learning experience for the intern, as well as to assist the agency in completing their assignments and responsibilities. The Intern will work in the Greenfield District and report to the Greenfield District Bridge Inspection Supervisor.
Hourly Rate:
The hourly wage for this position traditionally starts at $16.24 per hour for current undergraduate students and $17.24 per hour for those with an earned bachelor’s degree.
A Day in the Life:
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Participate in bridge inspections for INDOT bridges with or without access equipment.
- Participate in inspections of large culverts (small structures 4’ to 20’ in span) and retaining walls.
- Assist in preparing large culvert reports. Reports asset deficiencies to the supervisor for corrective action.
- Complete channel cross-section measurements and data entry.
- Complete quantity calculations of bridge elements for NHS bridges.
- Assist the supervisor in ensuring inspections/reports adhere to 23 CFR 650 and National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS).
- Other duties as assigned

What You'll Need for Success:
- Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a related field
- Relevant work experience preferred
- Basic knowledge of the mission and role of INDOT
- Basic understanding of state policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
- Knowledge of state government structure, administrative procedures, and the legislative process
- Ability to research, draft, and edit data and reports
- Analytical skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects
- Ability to operate computer tools
- Good research and writing skills
- Good interpersonal and communication skills suitable for a wide variety of contacts
- Confidence and ability to learn on the job and adapt quickly to changing circumstances
Benefits of Employment with the State of Indiana:
This seasonal position does not offer benefits and is limited to 180 working days in an eleven (11) month continuous period.
