About Governor's Summer Internship Program: 

The Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship (GPSSI) is designed to give college students real world, hands on experience in their desired field of study to enhance marketability upon graduation. Participation in the Governor’s Public Service Summer Internship will offer students a multitude of experiences including networking with state employees, resume building and soft skills workshops, agency head panels, and much more.


Hiring Salary:

The Indiana Department of Transportation's (INDOT) summer internship program is a paid summer internship that lasts approximately 3.5 months. Listed salary is approximate. The hourly wage is $11.30.

About the Job:

The purpose of this position is to give the student intern experience in generating standard detailed drawings using Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) software, and developing and producing plans, specifications, and engineering estimates for various in-house projects.

A Day in the Life:
  • Generate standard detail sheets and plan sheets. Create Title sheets, Index sheets and Typical Cross Section sheets.
  • Calculate and summarize plan and project quantities. 
  • Confers with higher engineers to perform standard engineering designs and drawings.
  • Review plans to ensure conformance with design standards. Ensures plan feasibility, accuracy and conformance with Scope of Services.
  • Interprets and plots base site topography, profiles and cross sections. Prepares sketches.  
  • Attends meetings with project managers, field engineers, construction engineers, vendors and contractors pertaining to project information, updates and changes.
  • Assists with other projects as assigned.
What You’ll Need For Success:
  • Civil engineering student at an accredited college.
  • Ability to use Outlook, Word, Excel, CADD, and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license to operate state vehicles.
Difficulty of Work:

Regular office work and minimal field work.


Established guidelines, practices, and procedures are available. Questions that may arise are discussed with supervisor.
